You see that?
That's a game that supports 32 players on huge maps with vehicles everywhere and buildings falling from the sky.
And it all runs on the PS3 at 1080p and 60fps.
Why the hell does Dust 514 have to be at 480p just to hold 30fps and look like a PS2 game?
It confuses the hell out of me.

Because the team CCP has working on DUST don't really know what they're doing. It's obvious they've never made an FPS before much less ever worked on a ps3 game so they're learning as they go. Their code is probably in such a state that the stress from just looking at it would turn your hair white and trying to debug & optimize it would give you a heart attack.
Now to be fair, if I were to make an FPS for the ps3 it would be just as sh!tty.
Never mind the president, let's overgrow the government.

I don't much care about the p's or the 'graphic level of X generation' stuff, but it would be nice if they could support more players like other games have proven. I'd blame it on their lack of ability with consoles, as all the 'PS3 level graphics and performance' are only programming cheats. CCP, however, has none of these cheats, so they are stuck at early PS3 levels.

Grimmiers wrote:Starhawk was 1080p? Also I'mma take a wild guess and say the custom built starhawk engine works better than the unreal engine on ps3. Yeah, you could run it at that.
The Unreal Engine has been updated over the years with a focus on making it run well on each console, and the roadblock is usually the programming, not what engine you're using.
Well, except with maybe the CryEngine. Very very pretty, but not so great on efficiency.

I think a huge part of this is the team and budget for this game is small. I'm pretty sure they are pushing the UR3 engine to its limits. I also wonder if the voice coms are using a higher percentage of the resource budget than other games.

It certainly was before, with how badly PC was lagging until they realized it was a voice related issue.

PC is still incredibly laggy for everyone and has existed that way before and after they "fixed" whatever voice issue.

The funny thing about this is that Starhawk had player hosts, DUST has dedicated servers.

DUST does a ton of back end computing regarding player skills, dropsuits, fittings, etc.
Each player is unique in that he has several attributes that are individually modified by skills/modules which gives the PS3 a lot more to compute compared to a shooter with simplified roles/classes or what have you. I think that may have a big effect on technical limitations.

PS4 supports unreal 3 natively... Runs on a x32 bit artityure and would most likely double the speed of dust development... |

One interesting thing about this video is it shows you what movement is like in an FPS (I know it's actually a third person shooter) on consoles. It's got inertia: it feels heavy with slow movements and time to accelerate. This allows for good gun game where analogue controller aiming is balanced against movement speed of the opponent. Dust does not have this: all movements are very twitchy and controls are clunky.
Oh, sht! I just learned you can make a signature! Thanks, CCP! Forums are getting better!

I have this crazy idea: to double the speed of development there is gotta be some speed of development to begin with instead of spinning in circles on one spot.
