The comms in this game are just bad and it reminds me of the recent Battlefield games which not something to strife for. It all comes down to either isolated squads only communicating with each other or a cluster-FOXTROT of a bunch of people talking at once. In either case, an inefficient flow of information is taking place in order for you team to win.
In order to fix this, we can take something directly from MAG where there is actual leadership, chat channels, proxy chat, and a call out system (which was rarely used because everything else worked so well).
Now I know not everyone here has ever played MAG but the comms system was nearly flawless.
There were proxy chat. This was where both blue-dots and red-dots could hear what you are saying given that you are within a certain distance (roughly 10-15 m). This was loads of fun because you can talk to the enemy, but I digress. While we don't necessarily need to talk to red-dots, this is a necessity in order to effectively talk to blue-dots since the "Team" channel is just a cluster-FOXTROT and that's only if the blue-dots are in there in teamchat in the first place. What we have now is just simply bad.
There was a call out system which had the phrases: "I need a pick up" (if you need a vehicle) "I need a medic" (rarely used because most people had at least a first-aid kit [equivalent to the armor repper in Dust] and downed players couldn't make call outs [oops]) "I need repairs" (for vehicles and you don't have a repair tool) "Requesting reinforcements" (duh)
Leadership and chat channels There were four ranks as far MAG goes. Each rank has special abilities and can call certain airstrikes, but I will not talk about this because this is not what this thread is about and I don't want it either. I will explain each rank as each rank can become relevant in Dust:
The Regular This rank is limited to talking only to his other squad mates (squad chat) and the squad leader (SL). He/she cannot switch channels.
Squad Leader or SL Only the SL can set fragos.
The SL has squad chat and could then go to the platoon chat (by holding up on the d-pad and pressing L2 or R2 to desired channel) and talk to the platoon leader (PL) and the other SLs. While the SL is in this channel, the regulars cannot hear what the SL says, but the SL can hear his squad as well SL also on this channel. Also while on this channel the other SLs and the PL can hear anything he/she says. This allows the PL and other SL to form plans and contemplate without the regulars getting in the way of the conversation.
We have SLs in Dust now, but it is the highest official battlefield rank, there is no supreme leader which is a problem. In pub matches, we have a bunch of squads not working together. There are no coordinated attack or defense plans. It is just random. In PC matches, we have a bunch of SL trying to talk over 15 other people (who are also trying to do their job of calling out enemy elements) to tell everyone what to do. It's a mess and inefficient.
Platoon Leader or PL The PL has squad chat, platoon chat, company chat (which I will talk about later), and platoon broadcast. Platoon broadcast allowed the PL to talk to everyone in his/her platoon at once. The regulars in the other squads cannot talk to him. It was a one way channel.
We seriously need platoon broadcast. It allows coordinated efforts and the PLs voice while in platoons broadcast is questioned only by the SL and the regulars in his squad, not the regulars not in his squad.
Officer in Charge or OIC The OIC has squad chat, platoon chat, company chat, and team broadcast. Team broadcast was the same as platoon broadcast, but it applies to the entire team instead of just the platoon. I see a future where Dust will have much more players, but as of now, the OIC position would not be useful. Company chat was the same as platoon chat, but it was a channel reserved for the OIC and PLs instead of the PL and the SLs.
Note the team structure in the largest gamemode in MAG was: Team: 128 players Platoon: 32 playes Squad: 8 players
4 platoons in a team 16 squads in a team 4 squads in a platoon
As far as Dust in concerned, I think it should go like this: 2 squads of eight 1 PL in one of these squads
This^ to be expanded once there are more players in one battlefield.
I know this may seem complicated when this was read, but it's really not. It allows everyone to be split in groups of eight instead of 16. I would much rather only listen to 7 or 8 people at a team than 16.

This combined with proxy chat would be an awesome system. There would be more overall communication happening, but at the same time less clutter. With Squad leaders responsible for relaying information between squads. And when squads get separated you will still be able to communicate with other blues with proxy chat.

As for the rest. Vehicles are in a weird situation. I'm curious what they'll do with them. Scouts make me cry on how easy they are to kill, I think a nerf to the scanner would help. Min-ass are either easy kills or a pain in the ass to kill for me. It seems like they are the most experimented assault suits in the game with the variety I run into. With that being said, the racial it has is utter garbage. lolshotguns, fix the buggy weapon. I was going to spec into it, then the bugs happened.

However the proxy chat brought into mind another equipment that the game should have. Comms scrambler which would effectively disable enemy comms in a certain area for a period of time.
I want to note that in the OP that I said proxy chat for listening to the enemy is not necessary, but it would be nice. We really need proxy chat for blue-dots for effective team communication though.

Anyway, thanks for the support. Any game that has more than eight players per team should have this and I'm unaware of any game that has done it besides MAG. Kind of annoying that I always have to mention the game when I'm talking about this system.

They can brag about a connection between dust and eve all they want, but when the connection is nothing more than scrambled typing into the chat window where they need to jump (and hope they make it) and praying they see our OB request and don't drop it on our heads 4 mins later...that is one sh*tty connection.
I'm still waiting for the moment the was shown in the trailer back in 2011.

Your idea for better comms sounds really solid, but I wonder if a Dust is...sophisticated in terms of code to support such a multi layered system. We struggle making the current one work as intended as is.

I have no knowledge of programming, but I suspect a complete reprogramming of the comms might be in order.

It was random in MAG for people who wanted leadership. You had the option of setting up what leadership position you wanted before being put into queue.

+1 What's it like in EVE? Eh not sure, but I fleeted up and they were big on teamspeak. I was like, why don't you use EVE comms. They said no EVE comms are ****** and don't work, apparently ever. I said they are working and I use them, and he seemed surprised. He was like, oh they must have finally fixed them again. But he acted like they were a lasting problem. Besides, on a PC, why not just use team speak anyways. I'm pretty sure comms work just like they do in dust. There is no tiered communication that I know of. It all hinges on everyone remaining quiet. It just seems, implementing comms isn't a CCP strong point is all.
Remaining quiet in a fps is a non-option because of the varied routes taken. I hope you're wrong about that last sentence.

I remember a red-dot *****'n because I knifed him at the edge of my knife range thinking I couldn't hear him. I told him he probably did terrible to switch nervously responded "ah.....shut up." He went like 7/16 in a half hour game with 256 players.

My brother is playing this game and told me they have NPC generals but in the next patch there will be player generals as well.
