I just made this character today, to see what was happening in the academy. I joined the match with the intent to never fire upon the enemy, and not to interrupt the match in any way, just to watch.
And damn, it looked pretty fun. I never even saw a single STD suit, everyone used militia. The game was nearly perfectly balanced, and it lasted for just about as long as a domination match possible could. The objective fluctuated back and forth, swapping control as the two teams fought over it. As my team started to pull ahead, I interfered a bit by ramming their LAVs and causing them to explode.
The lack of high power weaponry and noobs with poor aiming led to a high TTK, just like the good ol' days. Very few people ever spammed a grenade, and even fewer actually got kills with them. The only bad thing I saw in this match was a lack of diversity. Mostly ARs, and mostly assault suits. But **** CCP, that's mostly your fault for making the starter fits all use an AR, and making all starter fits basic medium frames.
The game looked really fun is all I'm trying to say. Wish that were how it was outside the academy. |

If we had tiericide and proper matchmaking, maybe we'd see this in main games.

There's a reason why all sports are organised into leagues. Typically the rule is the top and bottom teams in adjacent leagues are swapped at the end of the season, which is how teams progress.
Dust has two leagues: total n00b and OMGProto. Progression is automatic and out of the control of the player.

With the coming Combat Rifle and Rail Rifle being released, I think it would be cool if the [STARTER FIT] suits came with your race's MLT weapon.
only problem with that is, there is no mlt scrambler and probably won't be mlt RR or CR. And Ion Pistol and Mag Sec- but those aren't confirmed for this patch.

I agree it's a real missed opportunity not having the appropriate gear on the racial starter fits. Also, a thing that would really help is if they would call the Assault Rifle the Blaster or Plasma Rifle. Then noobs would be all like, "Hmmmmm, scrambler, plasma, lazer, which rifle do I want to use?" instead of "derpa, derpa assault rifle!!!!"

I made a new clone so i could check out the acadamy. I wemt 27-1 with the starter sniper fit sitting on the straight pipes right above the objective. Not one noob bothered to look up. Worse part was i was 3rd on the leader board, two others had over 35 kills with starter fits. I dont think the acadamy is any different from pub matches, most matches are unbalanced.

The days when you had a chance of killing almost anyone on the field if you just attacked. Yep those days were fun indeed.
Unfortunately when a noob leaves the academy and either witnesses or is on the wrong side of a massacre it completly changes how they play the game.
When I say massacre I do not even mean a stomp or proto stomp. Rather it is when a single player completly destroys 4 - 6 reds who are trying to take or hold a point. This is magnified when they also encounter organised corp squads etc.
Suffering this enough times is going to affect any player for either good or bad. |

This makes me think of a game mode I've proposed in the past.
Milita only mode
Meta level 0 suits, equipment, weapons, ect.
But notice how CCP makes most of the weapons and suits, only available through the purchase of AUR or skill points.
Hopefully they make a game mode like this. I know a lot of people feel matchmaking needs improvement (and I agree!) but if they gave us gamemode that puts most of us on even ground (gear wise), a lot of people out there would be very happy.

Academy is where I do all of my quality ISK farming. I just hack. Hack, hack, hack. The importance of hacking objectives is never explained to new players. Nothing is. I spent 2 hours last night teaching some promising noobs how to deploy vehicles, the differences in weapon types, using squad finder, and turning them on to good corps. Basically, doing CCP's job, since they're the only video game production company too incompetent to have basic PvE and other basic content (suits, weapons, more than 3 maps with more than 2 modes) implemented before the end of beta. (PvE is usually the starting point, for real professionals.)
The tutorials have fewer directions than Play-Doh. The lack of diversity in [STARTER FITS] is ridiculous. An Assault with an Injector is not a ******* Medic. No Scouts, no Logis, and the AV fit doesn't even have ******* AV grenades...
This game, despite it's promise of possibility, can't stop failing. Poor work ethic and worse customer relations will be their undoing in the console market.

I have thought on how to do some decent matchmaking before, but I think tebu gan has a better idea: Limiting matches to the meta levels of equipment involved would really be pretty cool.
You still get all your passive bonuses, after all, but it doesn't become quite so obviously disparate between newbies and old hands.
This game starts really fun, and promises a lot...but then, after academy, there's a failure to deliver until you have well over 10 million acquired points.
CCP, I'm still with you, but most folks aren't going to put up with that. You gotta let people have FUN, it's not always all about HTFU.
We-ell, off to bomb some bad guys...while I still can...
Hi! Gosh, I've missed you...with every bullet, plasma shot, rail gun, and missile.

Given that mercs fight under contract it wouldn't be out of line to have the allowed equipment built into the contract. Of course, mercs being as they are, may simply ignore this -- but face stiff financial penalties in the process.
Fits could showup yellow when they are over level and a fine warning amount could pop up and be accepted in order to take the fit into combat. |

The problem is the game has always been hard on new players, even during the closed beta( back when the mcc moved and you had to download the merc. Pack from psn). You would start playing and just get destroyed by all the vets, it was a constant change. Thats how so many of us ended up as heavies, they still had a sentinal starter fit to choose when you signed in the first time, and heavies where op killing machines, most ar users didnt stand a chance. Ccp needs a better match making system, but they also need to keep new players in the acadamy much longer. At least till they get 1 mill sp. During that time they should be giving players free fittings of all the suit class's, from scouts to heavy frames that way the noob has some ideal which way they want to go and are not just wasting sp trying to figure it out. That what i try to explain to all noobs, dont waste sp on fittings untill ypu lnow for sure what you want to be. Level up your gun to adv. And try multiple fittongs before sinking all that sp into somthing you may hate.

Arkena is right. Matchmaking or tiercide? It comes down to playerbase and New Eden.
We don't have enough players to separate them EVEN further than usual unless there is only one battle server with decent latency for all players, without some having a massive advantage.
We also exist in New Eden, where the philosophy is that your choices are not limited by something as arbitrary as matchmaking. Your choices should be made based on payouts, the reputation of your enemies and the abilities of your teammates, the risk of the contracts, the whim of your corporation. Gear should already be balanced and tiers shouldn't be and should never have been what they are now: an overall boost to performance with NO drawbacks whatsoever.
Both conclusions point to tiercide as the solution.

Seriously, sniping in the academy? Uhh.. You just answered your own question (that you indirectly asked about why they might be unbalanced, lol); people like you (and the two people above you on the leaderboard) that go into the academy to crush the poor noobs are seriously the worst kind of stomper. The OP was likely in a match without one of you parasites so it was balanced.
