I just lol'ed around and learned most of the game by myself. 1 or 2 months after I started playing Red Guards picked my up and here I am now. Been through the fall of RG.

ha fall of the rg i would say the rg is still a formidable weapon when in the right hands. dont get me wrong i had a few 30+ games with it in chrome now most ive gotten was 24 i guess if i tried harder i could hit 30+ with it . |

I've been doing my thing solo most of my time since the end of May '12. I only recently started squading more often, after a very long time of lone wolfing. It's my preferred playstyle, I'm actually a scout at heart, but the heavy seemed like a more stable platform at the time, given the scouts history of being the red headed step child.
MUDFLAPS has probably helped me the most overall just in learning how to use a tank effectively, though I'm not a tanker by any means, nor do I intend to be in 1.7. I'll take all that SP I used to get my tank and dump it back into my Incubus.

Shield regeneration bonus for Gallente Assault is about as useful as Sharpshooter for Nova Knives.

Pretty much everyone from this, one of my first threads.
Think I was 10 days in at this point, and the help and support from the responders to the thread kept me chugging along. I'm nowhere near mastering the game, but I've found my niche, and I've found a great Corp to run with. Might have never happened if not for the kind words and helpful insight from the people who responded.

Suffered for two months on my own. Joined my first corp Chaotic Intent/High Damage. I was only with them for two weeks, but my knowledge doubled just by the things I picked up from them. Specifically Toadfox. I still suck, just not as bad.
Great job, team. Head back to the MCC for debriefing and cocktails.

Squagga's alt DCY4 was the first person I squadded with, who introduced me to the game mechanics and got me into my first player corporation, who further guided me towards the direction I wanted to take because I had bought the started pack and gained the Dragonfly scout and HK shotguns. CrimeWave Syndicate's helpful people nudged me towards being a shotgun scout and helped me make a good shotty fit, and I have stayed in that road since then.
But other than that, I've learned all the tricks and tactics by myself mostly.

I came into this game alone. Turned out, that after the original naivety wore off, I realized you can't enter this game alone.
Nobody taught me anything, and in fact, I'm usually the one teaching people because if you've played one FPS, you've played them all.
I have learned about building my HAVs from this forum from various people because HAVs are a little expensive to "practice" with.
I always saw DUST as a low learning curve, and am still astonished by the amounts of high level players that simply don't have a clue about what's going on in the game and simply react and rely on their highest tier gear to cover their mistakes. Only in DUST will you find a guy in a 180,000 ISK dropsuit in the wide open going for kills because his gear can simply out last his opposition.
I still haven't learned all the little map tricks in this game, like reaching certain places, and I really don't care to. The other day a guy from L.O.T.I.S. showed me a high spot that's really cool, but I'll probably never use it. |

Pubstomping protosuit squads. The constant crushing defeats with no hope of retaliation in my first month forced me to rage quit for half a year. When I got back, 6Mil SP in the kitty and a burning desire to wreak bloody havoc did the rest.

Hell I got bitched at for asking questions. Nasty comments and mails for asking or joining a squad. Glad I never had to ask for isk! 
Pretty much being a new player was frowned upon by the community. And it seems ccp feels the same way. So I tend to help most new players however I can. Everything that goes around does not have to come around again.

Trial and error mostly, though PTSD and The Spinner helped me out and Doc DDD and Fiddle once sat me down and helped me work out a much better plate fitting once gallente logi's stop being the joke of new eden (read: ferroscale plates came out)

No one, because back in beta, I couldn't even comprehend the tutorial - it was pretty much "annoying voice and wall of text crit you for 100k" for me.
After I picked up on the game again in august/september, I started reading wikis, read the forums, the guide from Fox Guides and ISK, and videos from guys like CEOPyrex, daopa, Jolly Roger to pick up tactics and strategies for various fittings and weapons.
PS: Well, ok, I watched Jolly Roger's videos because they're funny as heck too.  |
