So my latest video (when it is uploaded this will be a link. No link and its not up yet) I show the camera views from 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 in Quad split screen and do an analysis. This thread is the one i mention in the video where people can vote, using the like buttons.
The next 4 posts will represent each view. Click the link button on the 3rd post in this thread if you liked the camera from 1.4, the next post if you liked 1.3.
Don't forget to say why so we can help the DEVS in the future.

The 3rd person view is servicable. I am for the alternate camera options mentioned in the video. What would make everyone happy would be to offer camera sliders for distance, height and center.
Just a thought. Optional DS3 motion control over the camera centering up down left and right for limited but fine control over vertical and latteral view and aiming. If the ship is in the way we can tilt a little to see around it. So we have a little more flexibility on the fly as it where. |

Sliders would be good, but i don't think that is a realistic expectation. At least in a reasonable time frame.

I think I've come up with an idea I like:
-Default 1.6 camera view (with ability to toggle in settings for other players).
-Give the dropships increased scan range and better scan strength to allow chevrons to be visible under our ships (thinking about 50-75m at 44dB to see all unboosted infantry within range, which makes sense considering theses are scout-like insertion vehicles big enough to carry such equipment). This will make targeting in ADSs easier as well as provide some intel. when dropping off teammates.
-And, as said in the video, mark AV players (swarms, F[a]Gs, PCs) with yellow/alternate coloured chevrons.

That was a great video, presented neatly and wasn't confusing at all.
Thanks for highlighting the little issues with visibility with passengers too and first person view too.
Personally I think that CCP are very close to the perfect camera in 1.6, and probably won't have to tweak it too much any more. In both my Logistics and Assault dropship I am performing much better in terms of reactions to threats and locating them.
Once again, great comparison. Really opened my eyes to the differences and what changes each patch.
I would be for the solution of making dropships semi-transparent, and also those suggestions you made in the video about flight instruments for first person view as well as different indicators on AV users would be amazing.
To dropships!

I want to look at this too. But i will tackle it in a separate video. At the moment, I am not really sure how I feel about it.

If you guys want to talk about transparency do it in this thread instead.
Judge Rhadamanthus, you made an really excellent video comparison of the issues of all the cameras. I liked the 1.6 camera view the best as it allowed me to see my ship, what's under and all around me too, which made maneuvering and attacking targets easy. As for the other cameras, I'd be fine with everything except the 1.5 camera as that one blocked my view of everything and made it hard to attack anything or see threats. |

An excellent video, but it assumes that third person view is the best.
The best way to put you at eye level for the best level flight is to be in the cockpit looking out in 1st person. This also solves the issue of judging altitude.
Now the current 1st person view is flat and that can be improved by increasing the view angle. Add a horizon and you get a sense of attitude.
Dedicate the entire right stick to view control and you can swivel your head independent of the ship heading for extraordinary situational awareness. Yaw or roll can be mapped to some other input, perhaps the six axis tilt for roll or USB rudder pedals for yaw. Multiple schemes could be made available on the configuration screen.
The gun can be slaved to the view camera making targeting easier and never letting the ship block your view.
This also increases immersion. |

I was only looking at 3rd person because that is the view that has been changing, and didn't say anywhere in the video that i thought it was the best view or the only option. tI is what we have been given and i wanted to go over them all. I passed over 1st person lightly as I plan on looking at that in a separate video.

I'd like to say 1.6 is the best but so far I have not been able to test it in combat. AV is always too organised and strong for me to even get a shot off. So I'll leave a like for now but will change it once I can give it a better workout

I greatly appreciate the work and consideration that's clearly evident here!
But the 4 videos depicted are visually commited to an ADS standpoint of flying, with the ADS crosshair issue that often doesn't impede much more than 10% of REGULAR DS flying/landing. With no visuals to assist the general DS players' eye, I suspect that the voting results will be heavily driven by the ADS-motive more than simple transporting or Logi.
I'm a transport-mindset operator, so I know my vote for Patch 1.5 for its transport and navigation merits will be trampled underfoot.
But thank you for trying! |

1.6 is by far the best 3rd person view of the 4. However it would be nice to have two 3rd person views and one 1st person view for dropships. Like the 1.6 camera angle and the 1.4 camera angle. Though the need to shoot at things at a better zoom fidelity is covered in first person, I think its more so the fact that having a second 3rd person view could help more so with assault dropships and future arial vehicles. |

The views are the same for all dropships the ADS crosshair just helps as a reference for where the ships actually is onscreen, either forward or back. If you notice in my summary (here at 13:14 - link starts at that point) I do point out that 1.5 was liked by scouts and for its maneuverability.
On 1.5 wrote: "...as it made high speed close to and under structures easy."
and at 10:04 i talk about 1.5 being a good view for maneouvering
On 1.5 wrote: so In 1.5 they raised the height of the view and zoomed back a bit. Compare 1.4 to 1.5, the ship looks smaller on screen and the rear is now visible so landing and manoeuvring are easier
Throughout the video I mention the visibility around the ship and its' effect of maneuvering and ADS pilots, like all others, have the same needs in these regards.

An impressive and valuable video, Judge. Thanks for delivering such quality to us. +1.
And a shout out to Reav Hannari for linking this thread in this thread.
I'm not a DS pilot, come more from the rabid swarmer part of the DUST family ;)
So here's an idea, prolly deeply flawed, but what the hell. What if DS were built like catamarans, with two separate parallel hulls and the space between the essentially open to allow the pilot visibility? or like quadcopters? Or had big Dyson-like(James not Freeman) holes in them?

This is an excellent thread and anyone that flies a dropship should give their feedback.
On a related note, what would you think of having different angles for the ADS and the other types of dropship?

To the extent where each dropship variant has a camera designed for its purpose BUT a pilot can choose between them with the Neocom settings, then yes. If we're limited to having a different camera for each dropship variant without being able to toggle between them to select the one we prefer somehow, I think it'd be better to keep a uniform camera angle across all dropships.
However, I will note that if we cannot switch between camera angles and each dropship variant has a unique angle, it could lead to people specialising in one variant, which could be interesting.

I'd like to have autostabilize mapped to the square button, and the ability to move/point my nose turret (enabled by holding L1 while in 'focused' mode, it resets when let go).
As far as other turrets, they should really have about 70degrees inclination and 90 degrees depression, and about 200 degrees rotation (cant cover turrets, but get the ability to shoot in front of the dropship). You'd see a *LOT* more fans of dropships then. Oh, and give the non-turret passengers the ability to look around, if not the ability to fire their guns. |

Looking at the video, there is something I don't understand. Why is the aiming reticle not including an indicator of your current momentum, seeing as you have momentum on all 3 axises and this affects the final trajectory of your launched munition?
Should be relatively trivial to include, and though I'm not a fly-boy, I think it would be beneficial.
Why are you even reading this?

Excellent, comprehensive video. You should join the Skype channels if you haven't yet!
Here's my thoughts (bear in mind, I don't fly ADS)
- Preference to longer zooms to see the rear for more lateral vision. - Preference with 1.6 level height, seeing just above the nose.
But I would like to make some rather high level (as far as development) design suggestions:
a.) Give partial transparency to the drop-ship when viewed from above to allow ADS (even though they've being removed in 1.7) to fire more accurately without having to worry about targeting -through- the ship. b.) Adding an optional (selection available in the systems operations) small rear view 'mirror' at the top of the screen. c.) Re-implement the ability for passengers to look around when inside the Dropship!

I would love that quick rear view look that LAV's have! I understand its fitted on a different button currently used by dropships, but perhaps using something else to see behind aircrafts. It would come really in handy for when you are trying to shake someone off of your 6/tail. Having an extra indicator that can help when flying to shoot at the correct vector of your target would be nice too, but I don't think it's really needed at the moment. |
