Something I always wonder
With the release of BF4 and ghosts it seems the FPS market is gonna be alot harder for dust imo
But what if dus never became a FPS and instead a strategy game?
Do you think the game be more of a success? Or fail harder?

Then you will understand why, although I know people that like it |

The game is a MMO-FPS-RTS, the MMO-RTS just isn't developed yet.

At one point in development, DUST was to be a combo RTS and FPS, with a commander on each team hot-dropping turrets and handling Orbital Bombardment.
Awesome in concept, but I can see why it'd be ridiculously hard to do. Maybe some time in the future? Once we have infantry and vehicle combat in rough balance with all the missing content in place, I have a suspicion CCP will turn their attention back to making something like it happen.
Here's the thing about CCP:
They're buggy and slow. They attempt some bizarre things in the names of balance. But they turn a lump of clay into something very good given enough time. They are, if anything, iterators with an eye on the long term.
So if you stick around long enough, you may see something like it.

Well let's break this down and figure how it would play out. Since dust is heavily focused around balance through range and speed of suits (you can kite a heavy as a light at close range) You'd either have to add some sort of "tracking" to each unit like is done in EVE, or you'd need to pretty much throw out all that makes dust well... dust.
Let me give you an example. Say for example you have a heavy dropsuit unit that mows down all infantry at mid range with a HMG, but does not work well against lights at short range. This could be an..... interesting idea for an RTS, and I believe it could maybe be done well? Beyond that, you'd have all the units like HGVs,LGVs, dropships, etc. Maybe even orbital strikes that are the equivilant of nukes in other RTS. It could all be fine and dandy, but what really makes an FPS good is it's mechanics and it's balance.
Since balance is something that is universal and not always particular to any sort of style, let's move on to mechanics. What could make the dust RTS good? Well the tracking idea could be rather interesting. Scout ahead and see some heavies coming only to ambush them around a corner with a few lights and take them out due to the tracking issue of the heavies at least with HMGs.
There is however one big problem here. A good RTS is very very hard to come by. Even if you make an RTS beautiful, people will not always end up playing it a lot. Look at the Supreme Commander series. The first one had absolutely horrid pathfinding, but it was played a lot because there were a lot of units to choose from and a lot of balance. With so many ways to play, it made the game really enjoyable. Now look at Supreme Commander 2...... it looks beautiful and has much better pathfinding, but they dumbed the units down so much and cut the amount of units by 75 %. With so few unit types, there quickly became dominant strategies and a serious lack of feeling for variety and genuine thought for your strategies.
What it all comes down to is that making a GOOD RTS is much harder than just making an RTS on content people love. What I'd like to see is just a GOOD RTS, and I don't give two fudges if it's dust mercs and gunloggis, or ponies with artillery strapped to their backs. It's been far too long since I've seen a good RTS around, and I don't think that CCP has the resources or the skill set to pull it off. Sorry guy, it's never going to happen. |

Yes but im talking pure RTS were you control A.I units that of course you pay isk for and have to suffer causality reports profitly
Im not talking about mixing FPS and RTS

As soon as they add a deployable structure it will be. It may not be for a while but I do think it will get here.

No. Never.
I'm going to give you a list of things now.
COSMOS, modular POS building, player run deadspace pockets, crew selection and beneficial usage, ambulation in public station environments, combat ambulation in sleeper/mission sites, true full sov control of a system with player owned sentries, targetable subsystems, optional high resolution textures, ships that break apart upon destruction, procedural explosions, player built jump gates.
Do you know what these things have in common? A few things.
1. They are promised features that were either half-finished or outright abandoned, and have been abandoned in some cases for over a decade now.
2. CCP has never admitted to abandoning any of these features.
3. They are never going to happen, because CCP have more dreamers on staff than designers. |
