Well, I'd probably recommend you start off with the AR, of course - decent all around.
Your suit? That really depends on your playstyle. Generally speaking, a Logistics suit is a superior all-around frontline unit, though its lower speed makes it somewhat unsuited to flanking manouevres, but the versatility afforded by the multiple equipment slots is incredibly valuable.
You would probably have to give up your sidearm, however: if you find yourself needing to change weapons to kill persons with equivalent gear, probably either stay with the Assault-type suits, or pick up the Amarr Logistics suit.
Your race really depends on your playstyle, too. Amarr and Gallente are typically plate- and damage-mod- stacking monsters, while Caldari and Minmatar tend to tank shields and outflank. If you brawl, probably choose armour; if you prefer your footwork, shield-tanking is definitely the go.
In the meantime, while you decide, you can't go wrong with pumping up your core skills - things like Armour and Shield upgrades, and your PG and CPU skills, for example. Those'll be useful no matter what suits you end up running - no-one ever said no to free hitpoints, after all.

Assault scrambler rifle with high proficiency = Oh Yeah
Perfect on a caldari assault.
Get 1 Enhanced Plates, complex extenders, CPU and PG upgrades to level 3. scrambler or SMG as sidearm.
Pretty much cookie cutter build right now. Unless you go logi.

Also the Sniper Rifle and the new Rail Rifle use the same technology on a smaller scale.

I believe the benefit of an Assault suit is their all-around versatility and balanced stats (although, to be honest, logis have the upper hand right now) so your best bet is to play around, figure out what your niche is. Test out different militia weapons, perhaps, and like stated above work on your core skills until then. Dust is designed for everyone to have their own playstyle and still be effective if they're smart enough. Simply put, go out there, have fun, and shoot everyone who isn't blue in whatever way you deem necessary

Personally I would try playing around first with anything militia, especially the Dropsuits, they make militia variants of all races basic suit. This will allow you to figure out whether you want to be faster like the Minmatar, shield tanked like the Caldari, armor tanked like the Gallente or balanced between all like the Amar. And I hate to recommend the AR to any one just because it's OP and hopefully soon to get balanced with other rifles...but, it's a cost effective slayer, you can cut through a proto suit with a militia AR if you skill into it enough. I personally love the MD, even though I get my *** handed to me by AR users. Skilling into grenades is a must for a frontline soldier too, and I'd recommend at least 1 level in nanohives so you can be a bit more self-sufficient with your slaying.
Not new, just new to you.

well, using the GA assault suit and assault rifle is def the easiest way to go, atm, but that's gon na change when their range gets nerfed next month and the MN and CA rifles start picking them off before they can render, properly.
However, tbh, the shotgun is pretty damn good since 1.6 dropped and the mass driver is always a solid weapon for the combat logi. Scrambler and Laser rifles are for those especially skilled marksman. In fact, I dare say that all of the light weapons are pretty good atm, although no compare to the AR, just yet.

Logis generally- Gal Logi for maximum tank (triage hives OP), Amarr Logi for having a sidearm while still having 3 equipment slots, Min Logi for maximum utility, Cal Logi for having a stupidly large amount of high and low slots. |

If you're already into Amar assault do the logi and run a MD/SMG combo. This gives you area denial and good close range support.

Lots of ideas.
Some good, some...well, I feel otherwise. However, the one thing that will be a good choice no matter what is to skill into your core skills; PG, CPU, armor, shields. Get'm up there. Toy around with different weapons (either buy via AUR or get militia...if it's not an option, it's generally not long to skill into a weapon at level one. Be aware that there is generally a drastic difference between level one and 3!).
Really good players have high levels of core skills and can murder you in their militia gear. I know, it's happened to me a lot.
Have fun out there! |

Skilling into grenades is a must for a frontline soldier too, and I'd recommend at least 1 level in nanohives so you can be a bit more self-sufficient with your slaying. Honestly, i find it hard to use the mlt suits as a precursor to the real deal. Minmatar medium has caldaris slot setup, caldari stole minmatar's, gallente works -ish- and ammarr is just bipolar.
Light frame wise they're bakward too, gallente should get 2 lows, whereas minmatar should get 1-1
I would use those other 2 slots you have and make yourself an alt, name it something funny -mine is funky sundays- and grab a basic lv1 medium, grab a mlt ar, and try out some setups:
Gallente stacked with reppers, no plate Minmatar stacking a dmg mod, a plate, and an extender Amarr with recharger, dmgmod, and repper Caldari with mlt shotgun, kinetic catalyzer, recharger, and dmg mod
Or even skill some whacky combos, like minmatar medium with a laser rifle, armor tanked, and has a dmg mod. Minmatar light frame, using a mass driver Honestly i use most of these, but you will find what you're successful in.
CCP wants me to specialize? But there's so many weapons!

Don't rush in whatever you do. I ran Caldari Assault with GEK 38 all day every day for the first 5 months of playing Dust. It never got boring by the way. But then I realised I needed change and saved up 2.5 maybe 3 million skill points, reading and watching videos for research.
As I was doing this patches 1.5 and 1.6 came in completely changing my play style and making all of my dropsuit fits unuseable. i had to rethink, retrain and I devoted myself to Gallente Scout so I can hide under enemy scans and run fast around the map - because I like it.
Find out what you like. Watch Pyrex and Lowratehitman on youtube. More importantly Join squads and ask about their suits adn about what corp their in. Since 'corporation tax' came about Corps Love new recruits! Just pick one with a lot of people playing in them at the time you play (a local one) and talk to them!
If you have no microphone, get one. My Dust experienced doubled in fun and interest when i finally got a headset abnd I got loads of corp invites too and you meet people who have spec'd into everythign and can tell you what it's like.
Sit on your SP. Wait until 1.7. Then see what the general thoughts are and see what you want to do. Beware of fads and trends - I got so sick of getting trounced by Mass Drivers I spec'd into Advanced EXO 5 MD, 3 days before they finally got a nerf! Troll!
No one on these forums, youtube or in the war barge can tell you what fit will be right for you. Try not to be a jack-of-all-trades as i was at the start with level 1 to 3 in almost everything. you have to choose, specialize and then you get to kill, even with advanced gear!

Just hopping in for a second to say a thing on Scrambler Rifles and Laser Rifles.
If you use them in a Caldari suit, you're going to have a bad time.
When they overheat, they give off a thermal blast. Thermal damage deals extra damage to shield. Which means, if you're in a firefight with a Caldari Assault suit and a Carthum SCAR, and you overheat, that's +10%* bonus feedback damage to you shield, which is your main form of tank.
As Charlotte must have told you, join up with the Learning Coalition and hang out with us. I can teach you anything you need to know, and we have plenty of other students you can squad up with. Channel: "Learning Coalition". Come hang out with us. :D
*It might be +20% damage. I can't remember if EM was +10% or Thermal was +10%. Either way, it's more damage.

Hadn't been on in a while. sacked the Duvolle as its too expensive at the moment. now running: Amaar Logi (basic) Gek-38 + SMG 2x adv shield extension 2x basic armour plate 1x drop uplink 1x compact nanohive locus grenade
next skill will be adv armour plates, if i go to basic shields the armour will fit nicely.
What point is it worth getting the Adv suit? I have 2 points in the Amaar Logi suit, each level gives +1HP/s so its like always having a repper (so I don't run one, I get a little more tank).
I'm doing quite well as things are and like the assault rifle. I also like ScR. I've been clever though, I signed up on a second PSN account and have an alt that gets passive SP that way so I can try stuff (shame I missed out on the recruitment thing with it!!) don't think it's a logi weapon really.
quite consistently getting 1000+ per game now though!! |
