I know there are much more important stuff for CCP to deal with. But one thing that always bother's me in games is how different items do very different things but all look the same.
Could we eventually get different models for the variants of all the weapons. It would really give a better sense of immersion and make more sense. A military doesnt just use one type of gun for everything. I don't mean different colors or add a scope or something I mean really different looking designs that make each variant look like its own weapon designed for a specific purpose in each factions military |

All it is is different internals, so it would be pointless to change the entire design of said weapon.

Not necessarily true.
Take the AR variants for example.
The TAC AR could have a longer barrel for increased stability when ejecting the plasma round leading to a longer gun
The breach AR could could have a bulkier conversion chamber (the place where the ammo becomes plasma) to allow for a strong magnetic field to contain the more powerful shot leading to a bulkier gun
The burst AR could have three barrels and three smaller conversion chambers to account for its high ROF during each shot. This would lead to a very different looking gun. |

We need other stuff first, as you said, but in long run small differences would be nice.
To use a modern example...M-16, M-4, colt commando, AR-15, SDM-R, and SAM-R are almost the same internally but look different externally. There are even bullpup(trigger in front of magazine), belt feed, and P90 horizontal top mounted style magazine versions of AR-15.
They also fill a spread of roles similar to the Gallente AR variants. So, model changes about the same as modern combat games have between a M-4 and M-16A1 would be nice.
For another example, Ak-47,Ak-74, Ak-74u, RPK, Galil, Saiga 12 shotgun, Draco pistol, M70, and Tabuk DMR are all based on same internals, with differences in caliber, barrel length, receiver thickness, gas port size, ect.. Dragunov SVD looks similar to Tabuk, but is not based on AK internally.

I have been saying this for a long time. Different styles of weapons within a category would benefit from having different models, as if made by different manufacturers, instead of all weapons being apparently made by the same people. Make it so there is ONE G75-VLB plasma rifle, and maybe one or two slight variants, and make the other models distinctly different, made by different manufacturers. Roden Arms, Allotek, Creodron, etc.
Ten-Sidhe, i see where you're argument is coming from, but consider that rather than looking at all the variants of an AR-15 platform, we look at all rifles that fire the 5.56 round. Suddenly we see great variation is rifles use the exact same munition.
AR-15 and it's ilk, the Steyr AUG, the FAMAS, the FNC, F2000, SCAR, L85, G36, AK-102, SIg 550.
All are VERY different weapons, and have their own defining characteristics, while all working to fire the same round. |
