*Re-posting this from an old thread that disappeared very quickly when I posted it before*
Been reading up on Eve/Dust fiction lately and came upon this little gem that reminded me about this forum thread.
About halfway through (third paragraph after the * * *) a big ol' Brutor soldier brings out a 'Force Launcher' that takes a big chunk out of a wall. It appears to be wielded by a minmatar heavy but it's shoulder mounted, so may possibly be a heavy or light weapon. The way it works seems to be that it fires a 'force field' that blasts everything in its path, so kinetic energy?
My suggestion is that the force launcher in the game would be a short range high damage weapon. Say 30m optimum 50m effective and 1000hp damage with 110% to armor and 85% to shield. I'd give it a suitable charge up time of maybe 1 second and similar ammo counts as swarm launchers.
The intention would be for it to be used as a vehicle ambush weapon (something entirely non-existent currently). It could also be used as an anti-infantry weapon but would be an utter waste of the small number of rounds it carries. Perhaps anti-infantry abuse could be reduced by giving the weapon the effective fire-pattern of a giant shotgun - i.e. the 'force field' spreads out like invisible pellets, say 10, with each doing 100hp damage. Vehicles are large enough that they would likely take the full blast but infantry would likely only catch a small number. An added effect of this would be that it could also be used as effective crowd control, keeping large groups of enemies pushed back but not necessarily killing any of them.
Variants of the force launcher could include: longer range, tighter spread (tactical); shorter range, wider spread, higher damage (breach); quicker charge time, lower damage (assault). I can't imagine an appropriate burst variant, so will leave that out for now.

Well if it is kinetic damage, then that should be more armour damage, right? But if it's an energy force field that's launched, then that'd be shield.

So a swarm launcher isn't a vehicle ambush weapon ...???... it has NO EFFECT on an individual entity . And this sounds somewhat like a Plasma Cannon . Nah, this is a short range dumb fire AOE weapon with no fire arc. And by ambush AV Im talking about literally being right next to the vehicle, not 200m away hiding up a hill.

Wow ... your courageous !!!! You have my blessings . Thank you for the clarification . Cheers. Im a scout and this would be perfect for sneaking up or jumping down at a tank, AV nade or flux and smash with a force launch or 2 and kaboom!

Not played COD Zombies nor Dead Space but would be intrigued to hear more about those weapons you guys mention.
Also True, don't know what you said before but please feel free to comment and help flesh this idea out. Even bad comments can help shape something good... Sometimes.

Well the thunder gun may be a LITTLE overpowered in actual FPS gameplay... was intended to demolish in a game against AI zombies. However it's mechanics could be applicable here. Damage increases the closer you are to the target, and if you're too far it does no damage but simply knocks you down/back. Could apply this to infantry in that if you're too close to the weapon, you get sent flying (taking small impact damage upon landing), but past maybe 20m your movement is only slightly disrupted. As for vehicles, since they're heavier and bigger than infantry units, they can't be blown away, so instead they take damage. Like a train hitting a feather as opposed to a brick. The brick is smashed but the feather is simply pushed out of the way. Exceptions could include if you're on a roof and you shoot downwards with a force launcher, basically squashing infantry into the floor (would be hilarious) Not sure if this is what you were thinking of but that was the image I had in my head. Very interesting and yes, there are certainly some aspects of this that can be applied to the Force Launcher. The crowd control side of things would be good but I think the mechanics might be a tad difficult to implement and then balance but in concept it's cool.

I wonder how you'd go about balancing a gun like this. Initially, I would say this needs an audible charge up time that serves as a early detection warning. Yeah, I hadn't really thought about it's anti-aircraft potential but that sounds great.
I'd agree that it needs both an audible and visual charge warning - I'm thinking something like a wooshing boomtube kinda noise and a lit up glowing kinda thing for the visual side.

With the changes to AV coming, I really think the force launcher would be a fantastic addition to the AV arsenal. Imagine a tank running rampant in 1.7 only for a wee scout to pop up behind it and use a giant AV shotgun to deal some serious damage and at least scare him off. The ROF would be slow and range little more than a sidearm but the damage could be immense as a trade off. The AI capabilities would be pretty decent too but with a very small ammo capacity using it specifically for such purposes would be a huge waste.

MINA Longstrike wrote:Honestly I'd love to see a heavy autocannon more than anything in this game... similar to the heavy machine gun, but much higher damage per shot, considerably less Rounds Per Minute (say 2-3 rounds per second at about 200-250 dmg, so accuracy is very important) effective versus both vehicles and dropsuits, with the typical minmatar damage profiles less effective vs shield, more effective vs armor. Something maybe like the current british rarden 30mm (though hand carried and with a satisfying K-CHUNK every time its fired and a spent round is ejected), or like this current 25mm m242 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb6KsYE4X3I An auto-cannon might be a little too large for even a heavy merc to carry but I like the idea of a low ROF high damage HMG style weapon. However, I think the damage profile would have to change because the minmatar already have a AI heavy weapon. Maybe make it like a heavy plasma/laser repeater?
