I favor shield based dropships
Obviously hitting passives have always been a good investment, but what passives would you recommend first and if there are any non passive skills that should be obtained sooner than later to make life easier what are they?
I already have points into scouts as a fallback and I already goof off with militia dropships and meager fittings, hopping to eventually have a scout/pilot hybrid unit.
Any advice is welcome as it will at least allow me to think it over. |

shield upgrades, maxing that out gives you a 10% passive shield resist that doesn't stack with modules, after that get every shield skill barring transportation to level 3, that unlocks the top tier mods and gives you a decent rounding in all the skills. as for what order i recommend getting extension and adaption first. another priority is electronics and engineering, get both to level4 asap. i also recommend getting vehicle maneuvering to lv3 eventually as well.
be warned, you need about 5-6 million sp invested to get anything like a decent vehicle fit. |

Much obliged, I might just wait till I incur 5 million spar (which I appreciate that bit of advice as well) before dropping sp but what you laid out sounds ideal.

Gallente (armor) dropships are about 150% better than caldari (shields) dropships... if you haven't wasted the SP/ISK yet I would definitely go armor. |

I have not thrown in the sp yet, still waiting for it to build up a little bit more before throwing it in, but what you have presented here is definitely handy, I'm almost wondering now if I should re-look into those new dropship stats that CCP put out to see if that still stands.
I believe the formula is that shields in 1.7 are going to be hit and run and armor will be stand and kill, due to militia fittings I'm used to the hit and run aspect (or hit and die) but I'll have to look into this more though. |

Not only armor stats are better than shields, but having the more low slots and a few highs, is so much better for vehicles, lemme explain why:
Personally for DSs (dropships) I use a afterburner and a scanner. I use an afterburner because with dropships super speed can be SOO useful to run away fro swarms and to dodge FG (forge gun) shots. I use scanner to help my squadmates (in the gunner seats especially) to locate enemies, also this helps to locate those pesky AV (anti-vehicle) guys. With this in mind (my playstyle) armor DSs are much more preferred for me, because I can get my tank (a good amount of HP) and my after burner + scanner. With shield DSs I pretty much compromise those two bonus's for tank. Also for a lot of shield vehicles you have to run PG upgrades because they suck PG wise. |

I was almost certain shield dropships/armor tanks was the way to go. Shield dropships are faster and armor takes a damage increase from both swarms and forges.
edit: I say this because I have constantly regretted speccing armor drop ships. And also because Judge Rhadamantheus's videos recommend shield drop ships and he is a bad ass pilot so I figured he would know. I only have 7 mil sp invested in vehicles so I could be wrong.
double edit: With the coming vehicle changes and removal of logi/assault drop ships I guess it's anybody's guess what the next best ship will be.

tbh there's a lot of debate among experienced pilots about which is better, people who have specced both like me and judge rhadamanthues tend to vary in which is our favourite and we tend to use both ship for difference purposes, if you want a ship with a active scanner you have to use an incubus, the tank you sacrifice with a python just isn't worth it, an AB can be argued either way, you lose tank but you can get out of hotspot much faster. you can argue stats back and forth but its difficult to compare how much damage either can take, if you speed tank a DS how can you compare survivability to a buffer/resister DS?
caldari ships are more responsive and much more sensitive on the controls, gallente ship are tankier and handle much more smoothly, they're less jerky. caldai ships are on the whole much better at dodging things and getting out of the area, but can have they're entire tank annihilated in less than a second, leaving them panicking and trying to get out of the fire zone asap, at that point if anything hits them they're dead, if they're quick and lucky they might survive, if they're not or are too low to react they end up as wreckage. a point in they're favour however is that they can fit damage mods without sacrificing tank, assuming you maxed all skills which give a bonus to turret damage and fitted LPCS2's in both your lows you could get a 35% damage increase, this translates to around 600 damage per proto missile, or you can fit a jovian and one LPCS2 and get a 31% damage increase and an acceleration boost. the python excels at the hunter killer role imo, particularly in an AV light environment or where AV cannot fire.
the incubus however possesses the tanking ability (provided skill are near maxed out and ship is fitted well) to tank 2-3 proto forge shots depending on type, and even with the increased efficiency against armour it has a respectable tank against swarms, and since its tank is in the low slots you can fit a active scanner plus another module in the highs, allowing you to excel in the CAS role, but the general descriptions you've recieved are relatively accurate, if you want to be light on tank but rather fast go caldari, if you wish to have moderate tank and be slightly slower getting out of trouble go gallente.
but make no mistake, if you're getting hit by av, regardless of how good you think your tank is, bug out. unless you are extremely confident in your flying skills and have a location on your hostile do not try to kill him, dancing with a forge gunner will almost certainly cost you a dropship, only the very good and lucky can win those things and even then its hit and miss, if its a swarmer ask yourself this question "can i finish him in the next two shots?" if the answer is yes try and kill him (assuming you have his location and are in range) but the moment you fire that second shot leave, if you haven't killed him he'll be emptying the rest of his clip at you very fast, if he is someone else is probably drawing a bead on you.
end of the day you use a dropship for one of two reasons, it fits your style or it fits your purpose, if it does neither then your are just wasting isk, use what feels cofortable to you and use what fits your intended role in battle, an active scanner on a ship you want to use for dogfighting is a waste of a slot, an active scanner on a ship built for CAS that ended up in a dogfight isn't, fits need to be built for purpose but still be able to multirole effectively.

well this got a little long and off track, cba to delete it after writing it all out though.
