Recently I stumbled upon the realization that I very much enjoy shotgunning but as a dedicated sniper I decided to save my sp an start a new character. Yes coming in I knew about all the issues with shot gun, been here long enough to see it in all its hair pulling glory . But despite all this when it works it's still so rewarding an fun to use.
Now with all that being said lets move on to the issue at hand. In a recent match I found myself behind a wall comfortably I can assure you with my active scanner blasting away an lo an behold a stray merc was approaching from around the corner. But to my dismay he had caught wind of my signature an was turning the corner to meet me. So with no where to run I met him head on in my medium minmatar suit no less.
An to my or what I believed to be my luck it was a scout, we were literally face to face, toe to toe, eyeball to eyeball, in short we were so close to each other neither of use could walk forward. An so I shot first since I had been ready for this moment and....the shield flashed.....and then.........NOTHING HAPPENED!!!! An without any hesitation after nearly getting killed he emptied his duvolle into me, while I promptly threw my controller out the window. An that was that.
In my opinion the shot gun should be a close range a.k.a "rip you a new one" weapon as it is in other games. But time an time again at extreme close ranges it doesn't register but other weapons do. So what is it about the shot gun that seems to break this mechanic.
p.s. To whom it may concern the controller didn't hit anyone just a cat but who cares right..........right \ (>_<) / |

Chad Michael Murray wrote:Maybe it's something stupid like scout speed making the shots lag, lolz. Don't mind me, it's 6:30 am. How to brain?
Only thing is that we were all but standing still in that instance. Also this same thing happened when I snuck up on a heavy hacking an objective and a medium suit doing the same thing. Both are two different incidents but same result.
The thing is the hit detection at range works an if I miss I missed period, no complaints there but the optimal range or even range for that matter seem to go haywire at that close a range but that should also be in its optimal range as well. |

If its a Prototype Scout, there is a slim chance he might have survived. 3. Shotguns are broken, and they become more of a headache than a reward to use. I wouldn't use them outside of a full squad and a Tier V setup.
I was at the time using a basic shot gun lv 1 variant, not the breach version by the way. No damage mods. An yes I also concur with the notion that a prototype scout would survive or at least have a chance to.
I my self have lived through such encounters before when using scouts but in this case no damage was registered just the hit animation, same thing when I went against medium an heavy suit an such a close range.
As to your last point while it might be true i'm going to stick this one out for now. I think there's a light at the end of this tunnel or it could just be my porch light "shrugs" who knows. |

Monkey MAC wrote:Its down to the nature of the shotgun! There are a couple of ways a shotgun shell can be detected!
1. Multiple HitScan Calls Call and Model multiple HitScan functions simultaneously, while and AR calls 12 a second it has no problems, but a shotgun calling 12 at EXACTLY the same time can put considerably stress on the the connection and the system!
2. Cone of Detection, instead firing multiple hitscans, fire a single hitcone from which damage is calculated! Problems happen if the cone fails to enlarge, effectively creating a slug shot!
It might also be server client desynch issues that effected explosives anc most other weapons to a degree, which can be caused by method 1. Although I also heard the HMG suffered problems similar to those in 2!
I would like to know the mechanics that CCP uses for different weapons an so forth but that would be to there own discretion I guess. Its stated that they are doing engine enhancements and bug fixes with 1.6 so we shall see the out come for all weapons an such.
Here is the link for those that haven't heard yet about specifics on 1.6 - 1.7 enjoy.

Johnny Guilt wrote:The shotgun is pretty decent able to 2 shot most mid suits and 3-4shot heavy when it completely connects, however it's hit reregistration mechaincs work similar to dot/ precision scoped weapons at hipfire meaning, the hipfire reticle needs to be red/orange to resister the hit and with he fast movement s of hipfireing, swiping quickly to shot someone even if you think youll hit them, isnt going to do anything (example)
For now I'll just keep those in mind. Also I watch his videos regularly very entertaining.

Shotty GoBang wrote:Good post OP. Would be neat to know the "why" behind phantom pellets, but better if the dang thing would just work :-) Last we heard, a fix was in for 1.6 (november) . Thanks for the comment, 1.6 may bring new life to the mechanics since it seems they're going deeper to the engine. We will see though.
