Sure: you can charge at someone with NKs or jump into a flood of people and go happy hunting, but it's the same concept as using a Sniper as a direct combat weapon; you can do it, most of the time it doesn't work well and those who can use it as a combat weapon are simply masters of the art.
From my perspective, Nova Knives are a side-arm; not a light weapon, not a heavy weapon- a sidearm. Just like the Scrambler Pistol, Core Flaylock, and SMG, generally it's not the first choice when going into combat. Sidearms are situational weapons used to SUPPLEMENT the primary weapon, not be the primary weapon.
I actually haven't had hit detection problems with the Nova Knives. Why? Probably because I only use them to hit stationary targets. Sniper? Nova Knives. Hacker? Nova Knives. Installation gunner? Nova Knives. Stationary enemy? Nova Knives. Sprinting Assault in the middle of the road? NOT Nova Knives. Large group of enemies? NOT Nova Knives. Tank? NOT Nova Knives.
Nova Knives aren't supposed to be a weapon meant for mass murder; get an HMG if you want that. The first step to getting good with the NKs is to know the place and the appropriate time to use the NKs (and sidearms in general).
I guess the knife is supposed to tickle when you stab someone in the back with it? Its a weapon, if someone gets shanked in the back it WILL do either 2 things: kill them or severely weaken them depending on the knife proficiency lv. It says in the description that it carves through even the thickest armor, sounds like a murder weapon to me lol. I one shot heavies with it using the Minmatar suit of course. Even in Battlefield and other shooter games if you get someone with a knife they don't walk away giggling. I have fittings using just the knife and manage to get plenty of kills with them, when the hit detection works. Seems to happen more often with the Advance level knives for me. |

anyway, as the title says, i'm a nova knifer looking for help. back before 1.4, i used to be so good with nova knives, but ever since, its just gone downhill...then i see awesome posts of people going like 35-2 with nova knives, which causes me to raise my head and think, "maybe nova knives still are useable."
the 2 biggest gripes for me are:
1. THE HIT DETECTION: seriously when it comes to any moving target its near impossible (at least for me) to get a hit that will actually register. its not that i'm missing, because i see the targets shields fluctuate, but no health goes down. this wasn't as much of a problem before, especially since you used to be able to sprint-charge. why they took that out is beyond me. i donnt have a problem with them removing that if THE HIT DETECTION WASN'T SO BAD. i swear, i used to love jumping into a crowd of reds with my knife bros and wreaking havoc then running for our lives (and actually being able to survive for more than a second.) can't do that anymore. earlier today i got killed by an assault rifle that did 600 damage to me in less than 2 seconds( i only have 300 health).
2. THE BACKPEDAL: again, how the hell do you deal with this now? they backpedal as fast as you walk forward, and when you finally get close enough to hit, the hit doesn't even ******* register. before, i used to jump behind them, while in mid air sprint-charge my knives, then run around a corner or something, then when they turn to kill me and try that backpedal BS, i hit them while i'm sprinting and they get good 900-1000 damage to their suit.
i've already lost nearly 10 mill isk trying to force myself to get good with them again. any help would be greatly appreciated, because i'm really losing hope for this game. i've been here since november and this is the first time i've said that. nova knives were the reason i played this game, and now i cant seem to use them anymore. i've tried the SG and i'm REALLY good with it, but i want to use nova knives. any advice, i mean ANY advice towards getting better with these is GREATLY appreciated.
Hit detection issues seem to happen more often for me when I use the Advance level knives, not sure why but it happens more with them. When I use the Ishukone knives kills are more consistent and the knives don't go straight through people as much. When they start to back pedal your best bet is to immediately break off and find cover if you are running just knives. You want them to lose line of sight of you so you get the opening to immediately flank them again while they are searching for you. Rarely do I attempt to keep running at someone that can just step backwards and hip fire, at that point you are at a disadvantage and are playing their game instead of forcing them to play yours. If they have scanners do not attempt to charge them, your tactical advantage is gone, get distance between them and wait until it stops and choose another route. Another thing you can try in tight corridors is charging your knife before you step around the corner if you see someone nearby and immediately swipe as they come around. Timing is important, you want them to see you at the very last second as they turn. Its a very useful tactic and normally catches people off guard, but only do this if your proficiency is at least a couple levels into it. You gotta be more patient with them, stay around corners or in shadows unseen and wait for them to turn their backs then sneak up on them, pick off organized squads by attacking the look out first and picking off stragglers bringing up the rear then make your way to the front. After every kill I dart off around a corner to see if anyone reacts to see if they are communicating with each other. You can use downed enemies as bait for people trying to revive them and flank them as well. The best thing to do is move and strike fast and vanish from sight, never stay out in the open for more than necessary. Use squads as a diversion, while they engage the enemy that is your chance to slip out of sight and approach from the rear, many people get tunnel vision and this is your chance to get closer. |
