Kind of a silly fluff thing right now, but I think it'd do a lot for immersion. It wouldn't need to be anything particularly grand just yet. Use some kind of an elevator / tram system to take you from your MQ door to the common areas. Put in some kind of a concourse with what looks like stores and stuff and windows that let you see the local nebula. The other big area you could put in could be something like the war room on the barge, with terminals to access all the menus we use in the neocom. You'd need 4 different station environments, possibly expanding on this some day to give more variety.
There's been a lot of curiosity from players in eve and from CCP themselves about how mercs will move around New Eden. Instantly teleporting all over leads to a spying problem from the Eve side. We could scan whole regions from the PS3 in a very short period of time to find out what system a given pilot is in. So...here's a place to start. At one end of the concourse include a shuttle bay, where you can book passage to another station. If it's in the same system you arrive instantly. If it's in another system, you arrive at downtime so that you can't just teleport all over constantly. Or...make a deal with a capsuleer to move you as often as you want.
This could also lead to an entryway for PVE that ties people into New Eden more than just pressing a button on a menu. Put in Dust's version of mission agents, who you can talk to in order to get PVE content of some kind (drones, or ideally some kind of mission system that gives more variety). The trick here is that you can only bring people with you into the mission who are in that station. This makes location matter for something, and if you're not in a corp encourages you to socialize with whoever is around you. |

Another idea from my corp's IRC. Introduce offices to Dust. In Eve a corp can rent an office in a station, which lets you set a location that you'll wake up in if you die. The storefronts I imagined on the concourse could include office spaces a corp could rent for a small fee, and would put the corp's logo / name on it. That makes it into a point that a merc can just teleport to when he wants, through committing suicide like the pilots in Eve do. So if your corp wants to get together and do some PVE, you meet up at your office and have at it.
It'll be ages before we ever see anything like this, but it's fun to think about. It would definitely give you a strong sense of location. |
