Thank you all for your replies and not just telling me to L2PNoob.
I guess I will just have to find a suitable mic when I get the chance and hope that somehow I can figure out which Corps I should be looking at. Just felt really upset that this game went so fast from "Oh wow guys... ya see what I just did there??!!" to, "Oh wow guys... any chance I'll get more than 5 feet before something random blows my head off?"
Not giving up yet... mainly because I spent money already and I want my monies worth. I totally could see how someone with no investment in the game would drop it like a bad habit once they "discovered" the "joys" of playing against pre-made squads. |

It was fun... really fun.
So I bought two different bundle packs and gleefully started working on being a scout to help my team.
Except now I am not playing against people with the same amount of SP as I do or level of gear and just get ROCKED with laser guns and tanks and all sorts of higher level gear I just do not have access to yet nor can afford. Game went from super fun to... meh in less than a few hours.
I keep using the top option for fights since I THOUGHT that was supposed to be nooby friendly but apparently it is only so for about 4-5 fights then ya get thrown to the wolves and their friends (I am guessing squads can queue up together somehow?).
So I want to keep playing and liking this game but I gotta know... is the only way I will be able to play and have fun by joining a group and buying a mic?
Go and play something else for 6 months and leave your character to gain passive sp ... you gain 198k passive sp per week or 28k per day .. you could technically log on each day to gain 3-6k bonus sp which would take you to 240k sp per week .. honestly if you play this game for 6 months you will be so annnoyed and bored with it that you'll likely quit and not want to come back,,,
racial variants and new equipment vehicles suits and weapons are being introduced over the next 6 months so really it would be best to just make 2 PSN accounts create 2 characters activate passive SP on each account and come back in 6 months , there will be more content more bugs and glitches should be fixed plus you'll have 5m sp + to use which will allow you to start playing competetively ... you cant reallocate sp and you dont get respecs on this game so with loads of new content being added it is not a good time to skill into stuff so either play in militia gear for the time being and dont spend any sp or do my original suggestion and dont play for 6 months ....
This game is absolute hell for new players .. Im not trying to turn you away im just trying to let you know what you're in for ... fact is every suggestion on this page is from a perspective of people who started their characters in BETA before the surge of protobears pubstomping all the time they dont know what they are talking about ... I'm sure you aren;t on this game to speak to people .. that's what facebook/twitter is for .. you are here to have fun ..

I didn't see this mentioned but use your skill points wisely
focus mainly on core skills found in the dropsuit upgrades section of skills this will buff up any suit you may want or need to use
when upgrading skills levels levels 1-3-5 are the most effective besides some weapon and equipment skills

Learn the maps, learn the weapons, gossip with squad mates.
Any bluetooth earpiece used for a mobile phone will work...thrift store $3.
Create some alts that specialize into sniper, heavy, and assault and learn THEIR weaknesses so you can exploit them as a scout.
Remote explosives I Scrambler rifle I Laser rifle I Active Scanner I Drop Uplinks I Mass driver
^will give you some things to experiment with. Also, militia gear uses more cpu/pg than STD gear, keep that in mind when you run into problems fitting gear on a suit you're trying to create.
And take it easy. Scout suits take 20-25M SP to round out fully (blame biotics and electronics)...so dont burn out, enjoy the game. |

Bought a mic. Figured I would use it if not here then on another game eventually.
I know PTT is set for left Keypad by default. Is voice only on during matches? Joined a few squads with the squad finder but I either got kicked before match (no warning or notice) or I just sat there staring at the social screen and nothing happened.

It's a jagged little pill. I kid you not, its going to be ROUGH. I do mean, ROUGH! I got my ass handed to me so fast...I just couldn't believe it.
If you don't find a corporation to grow with or you just want to run solo, your best bet is to stick to squad finder. Run with a squad always. Follow them everywhere, not matter how anxious you are to run on your own and shoot a merc, stick with your squad.
Everyone has been where you at except for the folks who played since beta. Stick it out, its a grind but its well worth it. I will be more than happy to squad with you if you like as well. Just add me as contact in game. |

1) Buy a mic 2) Find friends to play with [at least 5 others] 3) Get 3 million SP. You'll be able to run a good advanced suit. 6 = proto |

And this ladies and gents is why people who play in new eden shine above every other gaming community out there. Everyone is willing to help people, from the nastiest pirate to the honorguard of a militia, every single player has something to contribute to keep a newbro around just a bit longer. Make sure voice chat is enabled in settings, turn PTT off (unless you REALLY want to use it; PROTIP: You don't.), select the squad channel, then "activate voice". A green light will appear on the channel for which you have voice activated. It make take a few moments for it to start working. Also, if your squadmates aren't mic'd up, you won't hear anything, though they may be able to hear you (depending on their settings). |

Finally got the mic working. Squaded up a bit and the game was quite different for sure. Not sure where I should hang my hat corp wise... wanna choose one that has people playing and tolerant of my noobishness.
Starting to think like a scout though.... scanning like a mofo and then running like a girl if they are coming my way... lol. |

So I want to keep playing and liking this game but I gotta know... is the only way I will be able to play and have fun by joining a group and buying a mic? my recommendations are: 1: Don't spend any real money on the game until you get at least 3mill sp. I say this because right now its going to mostly be a waste. Once you have a few million sp you can start to specialize and spending aurum will let you get early access to better gear. 2: I do recommend a mic. It doesnt have to be anything fancy and there are some very cheap ones out there. But communication in this game helps greatly. 3: Squad up. Hopefully you can find players willing to teach you a bit about the game and teamwork. Maybe even get invited to a nice corp. |

So many folks had such great info. I have nothing to contribute beyond: This game punishes being new. It's sad, but true. I had the same blast of fun you did, then was really confused why I was suddenly miserable for a while. I wish CCP would break people down into tier: academy, then x amount of SP, with several brackets, and an "unlimited" for the hardcore players. Maybe give those guys some more ISK for their game :)
Join the HighLonesome channel some time, I play pretty frequently and we have a good crew--plus some scouts to run with! We can chat with that mic you'll be getting/have gotten already.
Hope you are having fun. |

It happens. CCP has worked on this for a while. Problem is, its tricky to get working. Just push through it. It's your only option atm.

Even though the biggest reason new players leave is being protostomped ?
Yeah great community, use the best gear you possibly can in a public gamemode filled with the new and inexperienced and then proceed to improve your KD/R by slaughtering them ...
Even at Advanced you get slaughtered by protostompers the only difference is that you then have a huge advantage over the other new guys using STD and miltia to balance it out |
