Just got into the game today. Played a few rounds after wading through all the tech stuff on how to suit up.
It was fun... really fun.
So I bought two different bundle packs and gleefully started working on being a scout to help my team.
Except now I am not playing against people with the same amount of SP as I do or level of gear and just get ROCKED with laser guns and tanks and all sorts of higher level gear I just do not have access to yet nor can afford. Game went from super fun to... meh in less than a few hours.
I keep using the top option for fights since I THOUGHT that was supposed to be nooby friendly but apparently it is only so for about 4-5 fights then ya get thrown to the wolves and their friends (I am guessing squads can queue up together somehow?).
So I want to keep playing and liking this game but I gotta know... is the only way I will be able to play and have fun by joining a group and buying a mic? |

Basically CCP has no controls on how player fight in this game, normally you would expect to be paired with players of the same skill level..... not in Dust, you have to harden up (not a callous comment its something Dust requires of you to be fun) and push your way through matches. Come to learn who are the tough guys and who aren't, if there are a lot of corp names on your team deploy, if not or against you then think twice and be careful.
You just have to breach about 3 Million SP to be competitive.
You don't always have to have a mic but it is preferable, I bought a mic for this game and have not regretted it, some of the coolest gamers I have met online I have met through dust. |

Welcome to dust. Unfortunately you have experienced the "cold shower" that is going from Academy Battles to Normal Battles. As you have identified you are seriously under powered to deal with this kind of play.
As you know, you need to grind to get WP to get SP to get better skills and suits, which for sure is going to be hard. My advice to you is stick with your "free" suits, try not to engage the enemy head on and try and capture stuff, such as Supply Depot's, Turrets, CRU's etc. This will net you some WP to aid your SP progression.
I would then think about investing in Militia Drop Uplinks, you can carry 2 and have one activated. Placing these in "good" locations will gain you more WP, thus more SP.
As time goes by you will start to get a better feel for all the maps and sockets (the structures on the map) and can workout the best strategy for how to play them.
After a few days you should be accruing a good amount of SP and ISK. Don't blindly spend your SP, once its spent there is no way to change your selection. Look at the different classes of suit, see what other players are doing with them on the battlefield and then decide what you want to specialise in.
Yes, being in a corp and having a mic is pretty much obligatory, even if its just to run with a regular squad that can assist you.

Ok so it sounds like you hit the wall many of the newbies hit after their first few games. Your right, once you get a certain amount of career WP you get taken out of the noob academy and put into the "pubstomp" academy. That's a place where people like me with about 22M SP and above live. So im going to tell you right now that there is a limited number of ways you can play and be successful in this game.
1.) Join a corporation. Yes.... you do have to squad up in this game in order to get the most fun out of it. And yes, to join a corp its likely you'll have to get a mic. Its incredibly hard to function in a squad if one of the members don't have a mic. It leaves gaps in intel and get people needlessly killed. So if you want to play this game competitively, or just with other people in general. I would recommend getting a microphone. A good one can cost as much as 250$ A decent one would cost around 50$ and a serviceable one would cost between 10-30$
2.) Use explosive weaponry. Grenades, Remote explosives, Forge guns. These are mostly one hit kills and are effectively the best way for you to kill higher level people until you unlock better weapons/suits. Its a cheesy way to play, but its effective if you get good at it, and the best part of all is that it doesn't take a lot of SP to get into any of those things! (except for grenades sort of.....).
3.) Spec into a standard heavy suit/heavy machine gun. Now you might think "what?" But hear me out. Having a Lvl1 Heavy suit, and a Lvl 1 HMG will give you just as much health as someone in a prototype Assault or logistics suit. This means that the heavy suit is the fastest way to bridge the gap between you and them. You'll have around 800-900 health and you'll get a pretty decent gun. If you play this right you should be able to kill at least one merc before dying every time, and if your lucky you'll get into a position where you can mow down several people. Keep in mind, im not saying you should stick with the heavy suit. Im just saying you should put Level 1 into the heavy basic skill (about 40k SP if im not mistaken) and just role with it.
But yeah...... that's all I got dude. Good luck! |

It is possible to lone wolf but you'll be much more effective on the field if you can find a good squad with mics.
Sounds like you just got out of CCP's academy program. Know that academy battle is not a good representation of what normal matches are like. Normal matches are brutal.
I recommend joining the corp Dust University, who's mission is to help newer players. |

Welcome, scout :-)
As you note, Dust can be unforgiving for new players. Even more so if you choose hard mode - ie. playing as a scout. However, scout play is also easily one of the most fun and rewarding play styles once it starts clicking. I've played almost exclusively as a scout since the start of open beta. I do have alts with other roles, but I have way more fun as a scout.
Best tip is to try to be clever about your movement. Never, ever attack anyone head-on as a scout. Flank around and surprise them. Try to use high alpha damage weapons, ie. weapons that let you do lots of damage in one go and then hide. Currently the Assault Rifle is also good for almost anything, but it's likely to get re-profiled in the future.
Find a good corporation that suits your sensibilities. I can't stress this point enough. Getting some nice people to play with and cooperate with on a regular basis really makes a difference in this game. There are very few obscenity-screaming fourteen year olds, so a mic is also recommended.
Last, but definitely not least, check out the Scout Registry - this forums largest thread, chock full of useful info, tips and friendly people that want to help you and know what you're going through.
PS: Also, be selective about which forum threads you invest your time in. This forum has a few fistfuls of negative, wannabe hardballs that don't really contribute anything useful. |

My advice will be; spec into one of the Low Risk classes first. For example ;
- Sniper - Heavy - Logistics
Ones you have enough SP, spec into the High Risk Classes. Like for example ;
- Scout - Assault - Tanks / Dropships - Commando
And so on. |

If I understand the match making system, big if, then if you did well in the Academy I.e. a decent or high KDR then you will be put in the high difficulty matches generally against high ability and or high SP toons.
However, if you are overmatched and your KDR plummets as a result then match making will start to place you in matches against lower ability players.
Gradually you should reach equilibrium when it comes to the individual matches you are placed in.
However, as others have said if you see organised squads, generally from the same corp, on the opposing team be cautious in your play. Eventually you will start to remember the names of the tougher players and corps.
Finally squads are the most dangerous thing in a battle especially if they are on coms. |

SPECIALISE. SPECIALISE. SPECIALISE
For a Infantry Assault/ Logi.
Grab the AR and hit Level V with that in a week. Now you have a staple weapon good for all engagements. Wether you choose to pump more SP into it at a later stage is your choice.
Now pick a suit. Going for looks is a good way to start, may i suggest you goto the maket place and press square on the proto suits and check out what looks sexiest to you. Now press triangle on the skill you need for the suit, it will tell you what bonus you receive, take this into account also.
Assault suits, can carry 2 weapons Main/side arm. Have a better starting tank and faster run speed than a logi variant.
Logi suits, can only carry 1 weapon (Except the Amar logi, hense why the suit has a few more shortfalls) have between 3-4 equipment slots for nanohives (ammo), Uplinks(Spawn points), Nanite Injectors (Rezes!), Repair tools (Guess what?), Scanners (Light the enemy up) and lastly Remote explosives (C4 Esk' Remote detonation). Normally fit a nice big tank. Mediocre run speeds (except the Minmatar) and larger than assault sig radius i believe.
Now;
Amarr 'Dual Tank' shields or armor, can be tanked both offers good versatility. Slowish run speed crappy sig radius. More SP require to 'Max' the suit.
Caldari Shield tankers a decent choice and a popular one currently. Decent run speed & sig radius.
Gallente Armor tankers another decent choice, abit sneakier (lower sig radius) and slower than others. Easy to Max the core skills you need to get the max bonus, easier to fit with the skill bonus's.
Minmatar, I find the Assault suit is pure shield, whilst the Logi can be dual tanked ala the Amar suit. Fastest suits in game, decent sig profile and racial skills are handy. Id say was middle of the road for skills to max out out of the four.
Once you have a suit and a gun then start working on your tank (HP) shield/armor skills. Max the one which is more important and appropriate to YOUR suit.
Now, when you get to this stage its a good idea to start hitting the dropsuit upgrades tab hard, it will apply to all your suits.
Biotic upgrades (Run faster) Fitting Skills Electronics/Engineering to incease CPU/PG.
One tip; PRESS TRIANGLE BEFORE YOU INVEST SP INTO THE SKILL, IT WILL TELL YOU WHAT IT DOES!!
EDIT HOW DID I MISS THE BIT ABOUT SCOUTS!! PAGING SINBOTO SIMMONS.

Find a good group of players to squad with. Solo play is for the hardened few who will never burnout. Microphone isn't necessary per se, but highly recommended. Lots of ways to be good at the game, test out different things (except vehicles as they are utter **** right now) and specialize into something you like. Be careful with your skillpoints as they are gone once spent.

i'll post an effective AR build that should suit you to getting up to par in matches. this is in order but I will be skipping the pre reqs, I apologize if the name of the skills are off.
gallente medium frame to 1 assault rifles operation to 3 assault rifle sharp shooter to 2 gallente medium frame to 3 gallente logistics suit to 1 active scanner to 1 nano to 1( giving access to nano hives and nanite injectors basic ). grenades to level 2( this will give you access to all 3 basic grenades mainly AV grenades ). remote explosives to rank 1 shields operation to 2( increases your maximum shields ) armor operation to 2 ( increases your maximum armor ) armor plates to 3 armor repair to 3 damage mod skill to level 1 gallente logistics suit to rank 3
from here you can pretty much do what you want, either speccing further into your tanking skills, or going further into your weapon or logistics skills depending on how you wish to operate.
the main way you will play this fit is use your scanners to scout ahead find enemies and shoot them in the back, try to avoid front on engagements, be smart and place your remote explosives in key spots to kill the enemies, stick close to cover until your tanking skills are higher.
I can give you effective builds for other classes but honestly the medium suits are best for people just starting out, and I can't really suggest speccing into the others without practice. even heavy is a very specific style of play.

Welcome to New Eden, Lysanna Soulreaver. It is typically a rocky road here for the first few weeks but if you stick with it this will improve and you'll find yourself in some great adrenalin-filled matches.
Lots of great advice in this thread, and i don't have much to add but i do want to point out one thing.
Many of the vets here who are stronger players can roll a noob character, graduate from the academy in one match, and then go positive kdr and earn good ISK/skillpoints in pub matches.
This is because in DUST, knowledge of game mechanics and FPS skill and battlefield awareness and tactics are as important as gear or skillpoints. In fact they're more important.
Many peeps might take exception with what i'm saying because they don't like an uneven playing field and they don't like the way noobs get hammered in DUST because it drive potential players away and we really need more players.
My point is that although SP and gear do make a big difference, stopping to think about how you're playing and how and when to engage an enemy in DUST will net you bigger rewards in the long run. This is especially important for solo players who don't have the safety net/force multiplyer that running with a squad provides.
And while you're going through this admittedly painful process and start to get your feet under you, start to think about what you want CCP to put in the tutorial.
o7. See you out there. |

The strength of a scout lies in engagement management:
-MOST IMPORTANTLY: Learn the maps/sockets -Learn the weapon types, especially their effective ranges -Do not get scanned, ever. -Retreat if scanned/seen -Dont run straight to your destination or in straight lines
The depth of this game is amazing and academy grads, given the right know-how, can build suits that will wreck IN THEIR OPTIMUM ENVIRONMENT: damped range scout w REs, scanning laser scout with damage mods, speed-modded shotgun scout, etc.
And accept that enemy positions change SO fast in this game! The best advice i can offer is to invest a day's worth of passive SP into active scanners and run around in a damped fit for a few days seeing what your playstyle is: intel gathering, sabotaging enemy equipment behind lines, planting advantageous uploaded uplinks, trapping/REs, etc.

First off, thanks for coming to the forum and asking about your issues rather than turning around and leaving.
Secondly, here's my advice to a better experience in Dust: The matchmaking in Dust isn't very good, but it exists and it can be worked with.
If the games you are getting in are too difficult, you may want to die a a lot for a couple of games. The matchmaking will reconsider it's believe in your capabilities and put you in games with less able mercenaries.
I did this purposefully with an alt of mine to have somewhere to practice some fun but inefficient tactics and it helped me avoid the more difficult matches.
Other than that I'd like to repeat what has been said before in this thread: There are easy and tough roles on the battlefield. Try finding a nieche that allows you to have fun. Depending on your personality you may want to face a superior enemy 1-v-1 as an assault guy until you're better then them, or maybe you rather want to assist others in being able to win the fight by being a Logibro, or maybe you want to be the big guy in the center of the battle. Just take a tour of the battlefield, observe what the others are doing and consider whether you'd find this fun. |

I keep using the top option for fights since I THOUGHT that was supposed to be nooby friendly but apparently it is only so for about 4-5 fights then ya get thrown to the wolves and their friends (I am guessing squads can queue up together somehow?).
So I want to keep playing and liking this game but I gotta know... is the only way I will be able to play and have fun by joining a group and buying a mic?
no, but if you're serious, then the best way is to join a group and get a mic. you need to be able to listen even if you don't talk much.
you'd be surprised the effect that having people to ask questions can have on your game. |
