I saw this article on another forum and thought I would post it over here. It may or may not belong in GD but I think it does. Hopefully some people can look at CCP Shanghai's communication attempts in a different light after reading this. Very interesting read nonetheless though. While its still just an opinion from a person, hopefully some people can get an understanding of how player communication looks like on the other side (developer side) of things and why CCP does or does not share certain information at certain times.

One of the things I really appreciate about CCP, particularly the guys in Iceland, is that they break all the rules. In other games you mostly only get to talk to Community team, and only occasionally see a Developer responding to something on the forum. With CCP it is mostly Developers you see on the forum. Some Developers even go so far as to troll the forums. Good fun. The only Community team person I know of in DUST is Mintchip.
You also have CCP staff posting as just another player, talking about their experience using stuff that they had no part in developing. It is sort of funny when you see a Blue tag asking questions about how something in the game works, because it is new to them. It is also comforting to see a Blue tag saying, yeah I ran across these bugs using that weapon too, and have notified people on the appropriate teams about it.
The fact that CCP DevGÇÖs are so open about discussing what they are working on, makes me feel like my suggestions may have an effect on the outcome of the game.

Don't forget Logibro... he's a bamf community team member.
Yeah I agree, after visiting forums on different games I play, im starting to realize the communication CCP is now putting forth (post 1.4) is actually really good, and if they keep it up they will maintain a loyal playerbase over time until the game can be fixed up and start growing again.
(this is assuming they actually get off the POS3 in a reasonable time frame though ) |

Bioware has had community managers straight-up insulting people in the past...
For what it's worth, I'm impressed with how politely Mintchip handles shutting down problem threads or how she replies to larger outcries. Miles better than a lot of what I saw in the Bioware forums (which also had their fair share of miscreants). |

I had not realized that Logibro was on the Community team. He is good at it.
CCP knew that Mintchip could deal with massive and unwarranted hate before they even hired her. She was quite active and well known on the Internet, although mostly for EVE stuff. Her hate mail vid, where she talks about the haters and gives examples of things people have posted about her, is quite funny. It is interesting that she used the same moniker when she joined CCP.

good article, many people on the dust forums need to read it, maybe won't make for such a toxic community as it currently is.
interesting rules at the end of the article:
"Rule number one GÇô I know GÇ£soonGÇ¥ to the player base means a couple weeks, but in development speak, that can easily be six months or more. Remember, these people may have been working on this project for years. To them, six months is nothing.
Rule number two GÇô GÇ£I canGÇÖt promise anythingGÇ¥ gets translated to GÇ£I promise it will be in the game soonGÇ¥ within a matter of minutes on various boards the statement gets forwarded to.
Rule number three GÇô Rules one and two are the creators of GÇ£The Company Lied To Us!" syndrome. " |

Yes indeed, like Rogue Saint said, that article should be required reading

Just so many good points in there. I think its not cool that gamers can hold developers under such scrutiny but feel it's okay to respond in a hostile manner towards the dev company as if they keep them in a basement making fake Nike shoes.
It's not cool. Support your devs doesn't always mean financially support them |

Those three rules apply to ALL software development. I've been in the business thirty years and I can attest to it being a deep seated part of human nature. |
