You're right, we should in an ideal world.
I'll be honest with you even though this may be a bit rough to hear: I'm just at the point where spending all day talking about what needs to be fixed feels rather pointless when so many of the decisions about what gets worked on and how things get fixed are taking place in isolation from the community in the first place. (The community including the CPM - there is much the we are not looped in on yet ourselves)
If the devs were knee deep in the forums soaking it up and engaging the public, working transparently weeks/months in advance of final decision-making, there'd be far more work to do curating public opinion and culturing productive discussion. However, until we get to that point, there's a major communication bottleneck that remains, most of which revolves a combination of lack of time and lack of willpower to move more of the development process into the open.
So for me personally, what I'm most invested in right now isn't really keeping the forum flames stoked - most of you are doing a fantastic job outlining the games myriad shortcomings and brainstorming some awesome solutions. I just want to see more of that work put to good use, and I put my time instead trying to convince CCP to harness that output more efficiently.
Marketing problems are perhaps a great example of this - I really think the current price increases are ridiculous, especially at a time when CCP is removing content from the game (maps excluded, and even if said removals are for balance purposes). It's also ridiculous to throw better rewards at people who have given up on the game than the loyal paying customers can currently achieve in the events available to us.
And its important, as a CPM, to make our opinions known to others just as its important for us to keep tabs on how the rest of you feel about these issues. Pound for pound though the most efficient use of my time is hammering CCP with the need to discuss this stuff with us ASAP before it angers more players, rather than sit around and nod in agreement with the rest of the voices on the forums who are likewise being ignored. (And I'm quite comfortable using the word "ignore" at this point and time until proven otherwise. CCP could dispel that assumption rather easily by engaging us and discussing Dust514's monetization, but to date they have not.)
Everyone on the CPM has their unique quality they bring to the table. IWS is certainly our forum champ, and even if I tried to keep up with his level of communication I'd only be neglecting my own personal strength which is my relationship with many individuals inside the company left over from my time on the CSM. We try to cover more ground as a team rather than individually, essentially. |

Great feedback, Hans. Thank you.
Not knowing what topics to focus on and when - i.e. because they are likely to make it into an upcoming sprint - is frustrating for sure. One can speculate on a roadmap from a very different time and 'place', and infer from CCP's public statements, forum comments and interviews, ofc, but it makes trying to focus on the most timely and pertinent parts of the massive 'DUST' discussion a bit of shooting in the dark.
There is a persistent misunderstanding on both the player side and the dev side, however. Players often ask for information on development candidate topics well ahead of the sprint so that the forum community can have a healthy discussion before decisions are made and coding starts.
Players often phrase this request as asking for the 'patch notes' ahead of time, to which CCP has replied on multiple occasions that 'they can't release the patch notes because the final decision on what features will make it to release is not known yet because coding isn't complete'. That is 100% true as far as it goes, but i believe it's also a bit disingenuous. The intent of the player request is clear whether proper nomenclature has been used or not: the player is looking for a pre-design list of candidate topics for the upcoming sprint, ofc.
Whether intentional or innocent, this misunderstanding leaves the player request for possible contents of upcoming sprints unacknowledged and unanswered.
These are the optics of the situation - how the situation reads to myself and i'm sure many others. And it's all been said before, ofc, but it's worth restating simply as one more potential piece of data to somebody somewhere behind the development wall.
That being said, the vehicle rework stats that CCP Wolfman posted are a great counter-example, and True Grit also deserves recognition for their communication and crowdsourceing efforts. These efforts are welcome and appreciated, but unfortunately are also exceptions to the rule.
At this point, my sole hope for early player input in the development process lies with the CPM charter. |

The player/dev communication in Dust is no where near as mature as it is in Eve yet. And even that has snafus from time to time, the current IW Scorpion business being a case in point.
What is also making it difficult is the current monthly iteration pattern that has been instigated. Its difficult to give us advance notice when development is moving at this kind of pace. I do know that the current corp roles were due in 1.6. But they had finished them ahead of schedule and put them in 1.5. Not because it was a way to placate the player base with the putting back of the vehicle rebalance as some of the tin foil hatters have stated but because it was ready.
That said, CCP really need to pull their finger out and not rely on a few of the Dev's who happen to be great at engaging the player base and create a culture of engagement throughout the whole of the Dust team.
We now have someone at the tiller in charge of the boat so to speak. Someone who from the most recent interview plays Eve and understands not only the importance of the CSM in Eve but knows the current free to play market. That's going to be important as the CPM continues to hammer in the message that earlier engagement is key at this point.
I will admit that I'm naturally nervous about another EA alumni joining CCP but I'm prepared to give him the time he needs to assert his vision on the game. He just needs to start sharing that vision to the CPM much earlier than has been the case. |

Honestly it would make sense to spend some time here during off hours or when not crunching code on a new feature or old feature that already works, discussing some if not all the issues we see. It is their code and it's implementation that the have asked us for feedback on as well as a condition for being involved in the CB test period.
It has always been this giant hurdle to communicate with the team, come tell us stuff, leave us notes for us to read next year when we feel like it. I'd get fired if my boss was looking at a product, proofing spelling and punctuation on publicly released documents (their video game is like that) and then ignored his notes and requests. No we are not CCP's boss but we are the customer...is the customer right? Maybe, maybe not but we have no way in knowing without some sort of response.
With this in mind I advocate sending issues with the game and suggestions on fixes to [email protected] if you actually want a response from CCP. They do get back to you in a timely manner, but on the forums they are non-existent for the most part, something that should come to an end. |
