You're right, we should in an ideal world.
I'll be honest with you even though this may be a bit rough to hear: I'm just at the point where spending all day talking about what needs to be fixed feels rather pointless when so many of the decisions about what gets worked on and how things get fixed are taking place in isolation from the community in the first place. (The community including the CPM - there is much the we are not looped in on yet ourselves)
If the devs were knee deep in the forums soaking it up and engaging the public, working transparently weeks/months in advance of final decision-making, there'd be far more work to do curating public opinion and culturing productive discussion. However, until we get to that point, there's a major communication bottleneck that remains, most of which revolves a combination of lack of time and lack of willpower to move more of the development process into the open.
So for me personally, what I'm most invested in right now isn't really keeping the forum flames stoked - most of you are doing a fantastic job outlining the games myriad shortcomings and brainstorming some awesome solutions. I just want to see more of that work put to good use, and I put my time instead trying to convince CCP to harness that output more efficiently.
Marketing problems are perhaps a great example of this - I really think the current price increases are ridiculous, especially at a time when CCP is removing content from the game (maps excluded, and even if said removals are for balance purposes). It's also ridiculous to throw better rewards at people who have given up on the game than the loyal paying customers can currently achieve in the events available to us.
And its important, as a CPM, to make our opinions known to others just as its important for us to keep tabs on how the rest of you feel about these issues. Pound for pound though the most efficient use of my time is hammering CCP with the need to discuss this stuff with us ASAP before it angers more players, rather than sit around and nod in agreement with the rest of the voices on the forums who are likewise being ignored. (And I'm quite comfortable using the word "ignore" at this point and time until proven otherwise. CCP could dispel that assumption rather easily by engaging us and discussing Dust514's monetization, but to date they have not.)
Everyone on the CPM has their unique quality they bring to the table. IWS is certainly our forum champ, and even if I tried to keep up with his level of communication I'd only be neglecting my own personal strength which is my relationship with many individuals inside the company left over from my time on the CSM. We try to cover more ground as a team rather than individually, essentially. |
