Introduction WeGÇÖve all be scanned at some point upon the battlefield as Handheld Active Scanners are now becoming a big thing and will be even more so when 1.5 is released. In this thread; I just wanted to clarify just how they work and how to counter them.
The Handheld Active scanner When activated the Active Scanner send out a high frequency pulse (Decibels) wave that when hits a another frequency profile, it sends a feedback loop, back to the user giving detailed pinpoint locations of enemy positions caught within that wave to all members of that said squad. This means, if you are caught within that wave you are then highlighted up on the users and users squadGÇÖs minimap for a limited amount of time depending what scanner scanned you down. Each scanner has their own scan properties; ranging from the time you are highlighted, the range and radius to which you can be scanned or how precise they are able to get a fix on your location.
Active Scanners have their own level of scan precision; meaning they can only scan certain suits within that dB range: Basic Scanner - 46 dB Advanced Scanner - 36 dB Prototype Scanner - 28 dB Focused Prototype Scanner - 15 dB
Each Dropsuit also has their own set scan profile, which is also tied to GÇ£DecibelsGÇ¥ or dB: Light Dropsuits - 45 dB Medium Dropsuits - 50 dB Heavy Dropsuits - 65 dB
As you can see the basic scanner won't be able to scan a Light Dropsuit as itGÇÖs dB profile range isn't within the scanners dB range: A basic 46 dB scanner cannot acquire something that has a 45 dB scan profile because its scan frequency isn't low enough.
How to counter Active Scanners? Seeing as anyone who is currently using an Active Scanner will more than likely be using the GÇ£Advanced Quantum Active ScannerGÇ¥; which scans within the 36 dB range. To counter the QuantumGÇÖs scanners frequency pulse youGÇÖll need to reduce your scan profile with the use of the Profile Dampener skill book and the moduals the skill unlocks; as they can reduce your Dropsuits scan profile below the 36 dB range making you undetectable to all advanced scanners.
Each level of the Profile Dampener Skill reduced your profile by 2% per level and each module reduced by set amounts: Basic = 15% Advanced = 20% Complex = 25%
Depending on the type of suit you are using your going to need to reduce your scan profile by the percentages listed below to be undetectable to Advanced Active Scanners and the Quantum: Light Dropsuits :: 22% = 2 x Basic or 1 x Advanced Profile Dampener Medium Dropsuits :: 29% = 2 x Basic, or 1 x Complex Profile Dampener Heavy Dropsuits :: 45% = 1 x Basic and 1 x Complex Profile Dampener
Summary Whether you're running solo or in a squad, active scanners are becoming one of the best pieces of equipment to bring to the battlefield and should be invest upon by everyone as they can increase your survivability 10 fold as you can see where the enemy positions are either to; retreat or get some kills. With the upcoming release of 1.5 youGÇÖll now be able to gain WPGÇÖs from confirment scanned kills received from any squad member, meaning theyGÇÖll become even more popular than ever! To some they are becoming a major problem within the community and being dubbed at the GÇ£wallhackGÇ¥. They are low in fitting costs and cheap in skill point acquisition.
The advanced scanners which I have talked about; only require 205,200 SP to unlock and is definitely worth it. Unfortunately if you have been scanned by someone using a prototype scanner, youGÇÖll have to reduce your scan profile below 28 or 15 dB; leaving you to sacrifice too many Low slots and EHP to be unscannable; meaning youGÇÖll have to gain a 50% reduction (for medium suits) or 2 low slots! If they are using a Focused Prototype Scanner you're pretty much screwed! (as of 1.4)
Anyway I hope all that helped to understand a little more about Active Scanners and how to counter them. If you have any questions or require more information; drop a question below and IGÇÖll do my best to answer.

Stefan Stahl wrote:Thanks for the write-up, but this really should be in the training grounds.
Also, why does the advanced stable scanner have better scanning precision and lower fitting costs than the standard scanner? This makes advanced scanners the de-facto standard in the game.
It has the same scan precision as all the other advanced scanners at: 36 dB. The only difference is a 3 PG reduction.... As for the reason why its there; I have no clue! |

So they do! Yeh prototype scouts would have a natural passive 25% reduction leaving them unscannable to advanced scanners. Thankx for information IGÇÖll update this. |

Fixed all the wrong percentages and added scout; Basic, Advanced amd Prototype profile reduction information; to be unscannable actively and passively for all advanced scanners. |

Though, one thing. Having level 5 scout, level 5 profile dampening, one basic and one enhanced profile dampener will bring the scan profile down to 13.5. Any combination the gives more than 67% will work.
Thank you for pointing that out: Updated! |

Extraneus Tenebrarum wrote:I think that to get under the 15db scanner as a scout u NEED 25% suit bonus 10% skill bonus and 3 complex dampners that do 25% each, leaving a total scan profile at 12.8 db. That means that my minmatar scout CANT hide from the focused no matter what I do.
Ps. With level 4 scout and level 3 damp u can hide from ADV pasively, and one enhanced from proto.
Thats a negative. All you need is: 25% for level 5 scout, 10% passive for Profile Dampener level 5 25% with a Complex Profile Dampener 10% with an Basic Profile Dampener
All together thats a 70% scan profile reduction, leaving any scout suit with a scan profile of 13.5; which is well under the Prototype Focused Active Scanner. In Fact all you need is get a 69% reduction :) |

Oh I get what you're saying, pretty sure its the way IGÇÖve calculated it. But it would interesting to get some kind of confirmation from CCP just have it works considering theres no real explanation. |

W00t, finally got Profile Dampening 5, which IGÇÖm now fielding an enhanced profile dampener on my Winmatar logi to be unscannable to all advanced scanners! I just love it now when it pops up saying:
GÇ£Scan attempt preventedGÇ¥
If youGÇÖre are able to get a scan on me fair play, prototype scanners are SP intensive and you deserve it! |

ovary obliterator wrote:what about the 10 percwnt passive bonus for having precision enhancing maxed? maxed?
Precision Enhancement has nothing to do with handheld active scanners and is for Dropsuit Scan Precision only. The skill itself where it currently sits; either needs to be reworked or buffed as the passive 10% doesn't give much or any bonus at all to be of any use, unless used with a module. |
