Editing a Guide to update for changes as new patches come out does not bump the Guide thread.
Posting in the Master Guide Index thread that the Guide has been updated does not bump the Guide thread.
There is no reason to bump a Guide if it is linked in the Master Guide Index and about 10 other places. Anyone who wants to find the Guide will find it easily.
Technically according to Forum Rule 14, bumping outside the Corporation Recruitment channel is prohibited.
If the Guide is clear and no one has any questions or comments for a few months, then the guide sinks to the back pages of the Rookie Training Grounds forum. No big deal! It is linked in the Master Guide Index and about 10 other places. It is still easy to find.
Then it sinks to page 17 and is LOCKED along with every other thread on page 17 of the Rookie Training Grounds Forum. A Guide edited less than 2 weeks ago, LOCKED because it is old.
The result?
The Guide is DEAD. According to Forum Rule 25 I am not allowed to repost a locked thread, so once a Guide is locked it is DEAD. Even if I did repost it all those links lead to the old locked thread, which I will not be able to update as new patches come out. The Guide is DEAD unless someone from CCP decides to step in and unlock it. But there is no petition system on the DUST 514 Forum that I can find.
I put a lot of work into writing guides to help new players have a better gaming experience in DUST 514. I am certain that my work has a positive effect on player retention. It would be nice if CCP could give some indication that they support the work I and other Guide writers do for this game. When something like this happens I would like to have some recourse or way to contact CCP to get such situations corrected.
My most recent Guide required over 20 hours of work over the course of a month to produce. I put in the time because I felt I was making a valuable contribution to the game and the player community. If that thread was to be locked I donGÇÖt think I could bare to go on with this work. Does CCP even care about the work that we in the Rookie Training Grounds do?
The Guides I have written and maintian: Fox Guide: Frontline, A Medium Frame Infantry Users Manual Fox Guide: Sniping, The Role of the Sniper Fox Guide: Marksman, Taking Sniper to the next level Fox Guide: Swarm Launcher, Unleashing the Swarm Fox Guide: SMG, Unlocking Versatility Fox Guide: Remote Explosives, Unleash the Mad Bomber

The point is you can't bump them because it gets them locked. |

Bump them by posting "OP updated" etc, you aren't exactly bumping then, merely informing readers that the post has been updated. And you might want to try emailing the support team, they might be able to help. |

Yeah, no-one seems to take that rule all that seriously. I've seen some people bump like five times in a row :) |

I understand why they would want to lock old threads to stop people from necromancing them, but I never saw any notification that they were going to do that.
If I had known I would have just made a post in the thread every time I updated the Guide. This would have bumped the thread without violating the bumping rule. But I did not know that the thread was in danger of being locked until it was too late. |

Here is a list of useful DUST 514 Guides that have been locked and can no longer be updated by their Authors. I donGÇÖt think any guide linked in The New Guide Compilation: A one-stop-shop for all your guides should be locked for inactivity. If Royce Kronos decided a guide is no longer up to date and removes it from his index, then I am fine with locking it, but the author should have some recourse if they want to update it.

Author just re-posts it with updates and requests the link be changed in the compendium.
I understand your issue, but it is not insurmountable. I think they put the lock thread in to avoid spammer necros. Might pre-date that though. |

1) They should have told us about it. 2) Technically we are not allowed to repost. I am not comfortable with breaking the roles unless CCP officially makes an exception for this type of situation. 3) If a guide is reposted, all the links to that guide have to be tracked down and edited.
I donGÇÖt mind them mass locking the threads if they give the authors of Guides some way to contact them to get a thread unlocked. Maybe just make a sticky were a Guide Author can post up and say GÇ£Hey, my guide (Link) was locked due to inactivity. Can I get it unlocked please?GÇ¥ Then the Dev that made the sticky thread would get a notification of a reply to that thread, check it out, use the link to get to the guide, and unlock it. Easy. Not much work for the Dev. Everyone would be happy. |
