Things break down into What, How, and Why...
What is DUST 514? Dust 514 is a FPS game for the PS3. It has a free-to-play option. You gain skills and equipment for your character. The maps are larger than average. The weapons have specific roles. And, there are a number of skills you need to train in order to stand above your contemporaries. The game has an in-game currency called ISK, in which you use to buy your equipment, and skill learning plans. You can access combat vehicles as well.
How is DUST 514 played? You are awarded ISK in battles, and awarded more for doing well. It's hoped that you earn more ISK than you lose. You also earn Skill points to use towards developing your character's progress. The best results are achieved by working as a team. You can form corporations of teammates, to take on larger battles and contracts. You build your corporation by battling for territory, and maintaining it.
Why do you want to play DUST 514? CCP has never told us why they are doing what they are doing. They have never gave us the reason why we should play this game, as opposed to the other similar games like it. What is there to believe in? We know the results of playing it, but that still doesn't tell us why we should play it.
For CCP: People buy into what you believe in, not what you do. They want the why, not the what or how. When you're over there on that island, making this game, what are you believing in when you make it? What is the belief and why are you making it? Not the result(i.e.- money, etc), but the belief. Do the people working there all believe in the same thing? Do they all share why they are there? Is that belief being broadcasted to the people you are making the game for? |

Iron Wolf Saber wrote:I think CCP is in the What stage still.
Also Who and Where (if you're a space time person when is not required) are important parts.
lol, I knew you'd respond to this one.
I think CCP should work backwards. They should start with why, then move to how, and end with what. Example:
We believe in making a game where the player has an unlimited avenue of customization and innovation. Are you a player that is focused on being the best in the entire world of shooters? That's why we built this game. For the hardcore shooter player that wants to have the prestige of standing out over a difficult field. We believe in building the best game for our playbase, we believe in having the best functionality, where skill is the focus. That's why we are building the game.
How we build this game is by recruiting the best people, ideas, and players to play it. We know we have the best people in the best positions here at CCP, working to their full potential, unleashed.
This is DUST 514... do you want to play?
Now, what CCP is doing is working with what first, and can never get to why. Example:
We make a shooter, that has character emphasis. (cool, cool... doesn't really stand out)
We have the best people working around the clock to make the game better (cool again, but so does everyone else)
Why you should play our game over everyone else is... ... ... ...
Because people don't care what's in the game, or how you do it. All games are pretty much similar. But the idea of why they play Battlefield over Call of Duty... or Crysis over Medal of Honor... or Halo over Homefront... or Blacklight Retribution over Planetside 2.... the idea and belief of WHY is what makes a player come and stay.

Do the people working there all believe in the same thing? Do they all share why they are there? Is that belief being broadcasted to the people you are making the game for? Lol what. Is this a real post? CCP have been promoting this game as the first of its kind FPS that is connected to a MMO of a different genre. As a FPS that has a RPG-like progression system that has a huge impact on how you play. As a free game that is being added to all the time, also for free. OP, just to see for yourself how dumb what you wrote is, apply your ridiculous WHY paragraph to any CoD game and see if your answers can explain that brand's popularity.
Nice to know this post went over your head, and you yourself don't have an answer as to why it's played or made.
CoD's why is "We want to make a FPS that EVERYONE can play, from first time time noob, to vet. We believe we can make a game that your grandma can play along with a 7 year old. Why you should play CoD is: it appeals to your drive to always be on the fast track, and quick decisions.
That was easy... I can do it for Apple... for Toyota... and for any other leader in a franchise/industry. All these companies have virtually the same What and How to make whatever product they want. What makes people buy Apple, Toyota, or CoD more than all their counterparts is because people believe in why they are doing it...
Does that make sense to you, or do you need to think about it some more?

Fist Groinpunch wrote:Dude your OP reads like a bad case of corporate speak. There are all these words, but there's no insight or point.
And your why for COD is pretty much applicable to any FPS out there. Even people with Downs are able to move a targeting reticle over a target and press a button to open fire. That the whole draw of the FPS genre. It's simple.
And good job on glossing over the part of my post where I mentioned CCP talking about how their game is revolutionary in a number of ways. I can totally see why you post what you post.
Nothing about DUST is original, except for the merger of EVE, years down the road. But its not very far fetched, or an idea to believe in. Its just a spin-off, like many games in the Star Wars franchise. And as far as the game itself, its just a rip off of Blacklight retribution and Planetside.
CCP should focus on ther lore, and the back story. That is something people can believe in, because that is something they have more of than any other shooter right now |
