I think what you're meaning to say is that bad Snipers are useless, aka the blueberries sitting in the redline with a Militia Sniper Rifle trying to get that one kill the whole match.
A good sniper that positions himself well, is in a squad, and communicates enemy positions well is a pretty valuable asset to have. Granted, if your team is getting stomped it's not like putting that sniper on the ground is gonna change anything. Snipers who cover squad mates and effectively counter-snipe are pretty awesome. When you are in a game and not getting sniped constantly, chances are you have someone keeping the enemy snipers busy and off your back. The best snipers are the ones you have no idea about: "Oh wow, this objective is totally clear and has no uplinks surrounding it" Yeah cause I killed everyone and sniped all the uplinks..."
It's when half the team takes up sniping that gives bad rep to the snipers who are actually being useful. Killing forge gunners/AV, sniping uplinks, killing enemy snipers, keeping high ground clear, watching objectives, these are the sort of roles a good sniper should employ. The ones sitting on the redline because it's "safe" are who you can call "useless". |

meh my opinion hasn't changed, I still hate other bad snipers on my team, and I really hate when the teams get over saturated with ****** snipers, especially since they all seem to snipe from the exact same hill and I just want to hit them with an lav or something like it was bowling.
anyway on the rare occasions I've been teamed up with good snipers it's been fun, and we've been a great asset to the team, I just tend to shy away from squadding with snipers because even me being useful this build is hard enough, let alone using two slots for snipers.

Regarding equipment choices, I think the ground level sniper is well served to place backup uplinks for points for which he is running defense/overwatch. I'll normally run in and drop an uplink in a spot with good cover that is ~50-75m away from the point so that if a point is getting over run, there is a logical uplink to spawn at to rapidly retake the point before it flips. Most of the "bad snipers" people complain about are those that are trying to maximize their personal reward and minimize their personal risk, often at the expense of the team. In this case, I would argue that their play style and risk aversion is dictating the weapon they must use. Thus, they're not really a sniper, but rather someone who wants to get a handful of kills without risking anything and therefore must use a weapon with a long range. |

Back in my WOW days, I was the main tank of a fairly hardcore progression guild (top 500) and my wife was one of our primary healers. It was a bit of a mixed blessing really. However, couples LAN party night is pretty fun.

I find it cool to snipe unaware enemies in spots where they least expect it. What is the most hardcore is when I take cover and then BAM I'm dead lol. |

Correction. Players who suck at their role are usless.
I was about to post a rant thread about vanilla assault guys; but, posting here is good enough for now.
You assault guys suck at your job usually. This forces me to have to give up on being part of the assault team and fall back to sniper to try and push back/eliminate as many targets as possible without getting mowed down repeatedly at CQ.
You know what? It works. Being able to stay up and keep firing into the area to at least push targets back if not outright kill them has done more than being another idiot who keeps pushing repeatedly into an area and getting downed by concentrated fire. You don't cap **** if you can'teven get passed the mass of targets camping the objective.
There is a situation for everything and the vanilla assault role is not the end all be all swiss army knife gametards think it is. |

The overwatch they can provide is invaluable, although a Flux scanner is arguably more useful. Green snipers are good, especially with a mic, overwatch is great. Its the blue ones up in the hills that are doing nothing for the team that I particularly don't like, because they aren't playing Skirm and Dom because its an objective and team based gametype, but because they don't die there. Criticize me all you want...but do you ever stop and wonder why the node that I'm closest to is never hacked by the enemy? Because I'm sniping any of the poor souls that happen to come by. It's when you'd have an LAV pull up with three heavies that all hack at the same time that I'd fail in my mission...but now I have Remote Explosives for just such an occasion!
As a sniper, my job isn't to rush out ahead of our advancing forces to try and clear a path; my job is to hang back and ensure that we don't lose anything you've worked so hard to gain. |
