In the Lore, it's referred to as the Plasma Rifle. That's why I call it the Plasma Rifle. |

yeah. Same reason the sniper rifle is called sniper rifle and shotgun, shotgun.
submachine gun and heavy machine gun will stay though. |

Once we have all the racial variants I am sure CCP will adjust names to be more in Line with the lore, and as others have said, many of these things are probably placeholders.
e.g. Instants battles are now public contracts or whatever they're called. |

Well, there's a couple of reasons:
1: Those names are too boring. It doesn't excite me when I see Assault Rifle or Sniper on the killfeed, and although it wouldn't help much by changing the name, it would help
2: The misleading, as when people see Assault RIfle, they think mid-long range, decent DPS, when in fact the Plasma Rifle is a short-mid range high DPS rifle. By making the names changed, it would help on that front with what range it should be at (if you say that wouldn't help, I've seen otherwise). |

Having things properly named is important and along those lines while this may be an FPS its set in New Eden, one of the few mmo's were every single little thing is driven by lore. There is no well its this way due to balance, they will find a lore reason to make it balanced. The broker is a great example. |
