The reason the DUST/EVE comnection is a fail is because taking planets is not all of what EVE is about. There is so much already going on in EVE that this planet thing is about as superfluous as walking in stations.
EVE is not going to back pedal to be a simpler game that puts such emphasis on planetary warfare.
However, a reversal of the present connection between the games would make for a better situation for CCP. DUST can represent the first in a series of simple shooter games that each make up a part of the whole.
See I don't see too many concurrent ground and space fleet battles happening for the sake of owning planets. All you might see is whatGÇötwo orbital ships? Maybe a third to take out the other orbital ship?
Valkerie is the next link. EVE could be relegated to limited status simply to include that player base in the fun; but, it wouldn't be the end all be all foundation game it is supposed to be now.
EVE players supply the orbitals and maybe a couple of other things; but, the ultimate benefactor would be any player in any of the games that wants to take over the universe. EVE players have there cash cow already and they have their basis for fun without needing to pretend planets matter. The planetary thing would be a separate shared element. Null sec planets are not going to be in dispute anyway.
Imagine I'm a player in the EVE universe. Doesn't matter which game I play. I want to make more money and gain stuff to use in my particular game. I can order a strike on a planet. Valkerie players attack from near space. EVE players can join in if they want as an aside to pop an orbital and DUST players lay down the ground attack.
See make the planet ownership thing a game of its own that is made up of the combination of the various games rather than an EVE player thing that just uses other games as an addition.
That way these other shooter style games will be the real doorway into planetary conquest for its own sake with the focus on that one goal.
Maybe then we could have simultaneous fleet battles that really matter by way of simplified version of EVE that is big ship fleet warfare and only big ship fleet warfare for planets. |

Planets need to produce a resource that is highly motivational to EVE pilots, this will cause it to have a high price tag. Anything with a high price tag in EVE will get people's attention and motivate them. One idea is to have planets produce a goo that can be refined into a +10% passive SP booster for EVE pilots (actual percent would need to have the right balance).
Another option would be having planets produce a substance necessary for fueling jump bridges, which are the logistical networks that sustain the large Null Sec empires. In EVE many players think the jump bridges are too strong and allow major Corp Alliance to project power too far and too quickly across the map. By having them dependent on a resource, these alliances will be highly motivated to maintain a secure and reliable supply of this resource. It also creates the opportunity for a corp looking to weaken the Null Alliance by taking out their supply channels.
Another option would be a resource that is required for titan jump-bridging fuel. This would have a similar effect as the above suggestion, but effect smaller Null Sec Corps too.
If planets made something people in EVE care about, then people in EVE will care, it's as simple as that. The current bonuses are laughably weak. CCP would be better off making the DUST resource too good, rather than not good enough, because, let's face it, DUST needs all the help it can get right now. |

The current bonuses to the logistics network are not being overlooked are they? Fueling POS's is still a logistics event and cumbersome, especially in war time. I am all for buffing bonuses to the goo babies, but the market has to come first.
The problems I see in the mesh is that EVE players will be effectively creating crap-tons of militia gear and selling it for recycle. DUST gear is cheap -extremely cheap- to EVE pilots. It means nothing to an EvE vet to shell out a billion isk for 1 ship Where we hesitate taking our Proto gear out into a Pub stomp
Once the markets go live, there WILL be a way to transfer EvE isk to DUST isk, Prices/ payouts must go through the roof before the markets go live or tiers will become meaningless and Proto will just be how it is.
Originally the DEVs had Zero idea how much isk a Merc would waste on a match. When the numbers came out they knew they had screwed up, it left their jaws on the floor. |

CCP actually talks about the ISK between EVE and DUST at fanfest, and the solution is having a tax system that CCP can monitor and balance the flow of ISK each way. Also, most pilots in EVE think long and hard before buying a billion ISK ship. They'll even sing to save ships much cheaper than that. Just google "Eve Sining ransoms" for some laughs. |

My ultimate concern is what would create fleet battles that coincide with DUST ground assaults like the promo videos show and like the early idea presented by CCP?
Even with resources coming from planets you still have little motivation for a fleet battle especially with all the other stuff you can do in EVE.
A simpler fleet combat game would put all the attention on the coordinated ground/space assault. The people who'd play it would be interested in that element.
EVE is very much a general economic/political game with several interests already not to mention the preference for attacking people at gates before they'd even get to the planets or zooming around system to system playing cat and mouse.
I.e. a specific, fun kind of senario a la Star Wars doesn't exist versus a more pragmatic kind of chess game style combat.
If you only need to pop troops down to the planet to take it and otherwise just pop an orbital from a destoyer then why even have the connection really.

Depending on how the planet cannons operate, many smaller nullsec corps could very easily spend their billions of iskies to field a few. Fleet battles spawn from roams, wars, boredom, the meta... there is always a gudfights to be had in Eve. We just wont know until it is deployed. There is a ton of potential... but just potential as of now. |
