This is my first post, so I'll try to sound as mentally stable and well worded as possible.
Why?
When I first started playing Dust about 2 months ago, I quickly knew exactly what I wanted to learn how to do...
Soar through the skies as one of the greatest pilots New Eden had ever seen. Now, much like every other pilot, it took *a lot* of trial and error to learn how to operate what is essentially a brick with 4 jetpacks taped to its underside. But I eventually got the hang of it.
1 month and 2.5 million skill points later I was the (somewhat) proud operator of a Python class Assault Drop Ship. You may have seen me pulling off daring stunts such as flying under the tabletop while myself and my gunners rained down protofrag missiles, or performing aileron rolls and backflips to dodge rails and forgeguns. I'd average 10/0, while my gunners would do the same or better. This would only be possibly however, if the stars aligned, and I had made a virgin sacrifice to satan before I log on each night, praying for there to be no one who decided to bring out a protoforge or proto rail tank.
I was eventually hired by my current Corporation, The Generals, as they saw promise in my skills. In our PC battles I was always designated as the Air Calvary Operator, and flew point to point providing Close Air Support sometimes at danger close without error.
Needless to say...I was...living my dream.
Now, I'm quite familiar with Condor Squad, great group of aces they are, and I know that many of them feel the same way as I do when I ask...
Why? Dustmercs?
You all, every last one of you knows irrefutably. That the dropship is the most flimsy, situational tool in dust. In terms of isk to WP ratio it is *the* most inefficient item in the game. There is absolutely now arguing that point.
This being the case, I think it a fair assertion that there is not a single dropship pilot that is a "power gamer" or a "protobear". We put ourselves through this struggle because we rarely care about our KDR or WPs.
When you decide to yourself, "Screw the game's objective, I'm gonna spend 15 minutes sitting here with my proto forge/swarm/tank or sit inside of an installation until the air is clear. I want you to think for a moment of how long it took that pilot to save up for that 800k isk dropship you're going to blow up in 6 seconds, or how long it took him to learn to fly that thing as you spend 3 seconds to charge/lock on/spool up your forge/swarm/rails. Ask yourself, how can he still fly that thing with the terrible camera change now?
The people who make it their goal to clip the wings of a pilot are quite literally dream killers... If you're already using protogear, just go get a kill and an assist. It's the same reward in WP's.
And to you CCP. Why?
Why isn't there even the slightest acknowledgement of Dropships anywhere on the forums? Even in your thread about vehicles in 1.5...You mention everything except for dropships.
The only evidence that I've seen that you know they exist is the terrible change to the dropship camera in 1.4, which thankfully, you guys have decided to reverse your decision on.
The smallest mention of how the developers perceive the current state of dropships would be most appreciated, being left in the dark feels absolutely maddening.
That's all I really have to say, it just took the changes in 1.4 to finally get me to speak my mind. That and the 2 people who decided to bring out a Gastun's Forge against my Python in a public match last night...annnnd the 6 Wiryakomi swarms (some were invisible) that targeted me 10 seconds after dustoff.
TL;DR: WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE ENJOYMENT OUT OF BLOWING UP ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE, WEAKEST, BUT MOST FUN VEHICLES IN THE GAME.
-AND-
CCP WHY WON'T YOU TALK ABOUT DROPSHIPS EVEN THOUGH THE ABOVE STATEMENTS HAVE REINFORECED THEM AS OBJECTS OF RIDICULE IN THE DUST COMMUNITY.
Thank you for your time if you read all of this. |

I ask the same question every time I fly my Incubus. How could you sit down for the entirety of a Skirmish to shoot at something that poses less threat to you than the guy with the Assault Rifle 30m away from you? |

Corpus, Why?!
Why would you bring buckets of tears directly to the Troll Bar at happy hour? Why?
Do you think that pouring out your heart and expressing your pain and income agony to these clones is going to miraculously alter thier worldview and grant you some reprieve?
Stand the F by, Sir. This is your can and you have opened it.
Next time...please consider the likelihood of your audience's ability to have any degree of compassion for our plight.
And it is our plight. Ever DS pilot can relate to what you say
But truly expect everclone witha forge gu in hand considers your post added motivation
good news is that update 1.5 is intended to focus on vehicles, to include drop ships
All that said, since 1.4 landed, for some reason my dropships have been surviving longer. Even the gorgans are taking hard hits and surviving.
I think removing burn damage and loss of flight control helps a lot. Thank you CCP for giving me the full use of my aircrafts entire EHP |

First of all I have a huge amount of respect for those players whom regardless of all the challenges take the time, effort, and financial cost to learn to fly the DS in a respectable manner. I personally still consider them flying coffins but have seen the greats pull off matches that I can only envy.
In answer to your question: For me personally the DS is a priority target not because of what the DS can do, but, what the Forger/ Sniper/Swarm launcher can do once a up-link is placed on a tower by that DS.
Sorry to shatter your dreams but sadly you are an ends to a means that would happily shatter mine. |

I know it's a fool's errand to make any such attempt to garner sympathy on an online forum. But I simply couldn't idly sit by without expressing myself in the forlorn hope that someone with pull in CCP was aware of how I (and other pilots) feel. |

Skilled soldiers on high can dominate and control large portion of the field and often can be the determining factor on the final results of the battle.

I mean, I totally understand that reasoning. But if i wanted to do that, I'd simply hop in a Logi DS and fly circles around the ceiling. I normally just fly the Python and do strafing runs with all the missiles. |

Over the last year I've put SP into Dropships off and on. CCP will never make dropships worth anything but to blow up and for pissing away SP and ISK. Never, ever, ever, ever. You will constantly be craped on and ignored and treated like you don't matter as a player.
CCP is in the business of creating a game that they want the public to play. CCP is not in the business of creating a game that the public wants to play. The public has told them, begged them and preached to them for over a year. They believe they know better than the people that they want to play their game. The public has responded by pressing the delete button. CCP has chosen to learn the hard way. Now the only thing left for CCP to do is accept that its a failure because CCP didn't look in the mirror to see what the problem was and is.
If this offends or hurts your feelings CCP then HTFU. Is that what you tell the public? |

I remember from way back in my BF3 days that whenever my team was spawn camping the other team on Conquest on those servers with ridiculously high ticket counts, I'd always feel bad about the poor guys who were being camped. Sometimes when I saw someone flanking us, I'd even just let him come around and kill my team.
Fly safe! You have a friend in me.

Edit: Well, you would, if I played Dust anymore. I just sort of lurk here on the forums now. >.> |

I want to play devils advocate for a moment. Because I fly and lose copious amounts of drop ship hullage too but I want to be realistic for the long term
What do we want, as pilots? What would the best, balanced situation for aircraft in dust look like?
Do we expect a dropship to have the survivability of an HAV? Do we want a DS to have the kind of survivability that LAVs currently have?
What are the risks vs rewards of drop ships in our balanced Dust viewpoint?
I, personally, like the idea of keeping drop ships weaker in terms of EHP than both HAVs and logistics LAVs. I would prefer that the best method of keeping a dropship alive in a combat environment be maneuverability and piloting skill.
Something the DS pilot/ForgeGunning poster above said makes a lot of sense: it's all about holding the high ground
I love that about Dust. Everyone feels that inherent combat advantage when they are above the enemy
That makes air superiority and the ability to reach high ground a very valuable asset. I want to preserve that value. But if every militia pilot can DS his squad to the top of the map or rain down ordnance with impunity...that value gets lost
Because things are valuable primarily with reference to thier rarity.
Drop ships need more resilience under fire...but how we get them to that point is critical.
I want the Generals to seek out pilots like Corpus because of his flight skills...honed and perfected from endless hours of practice flying against AV ( and, yes, losing tons of isk). Because if everyone can do it everyone will
My recommendation is to ensure that Pilots, as a role, are able to boost DS resistance to fire and enhance thier craft's maneuverability to a degree that lets them hone real flight skills
I want to have a system that delivers great rewards ( in terms of SP and WP but mostly by giving your team a big tactical advantage) but At great cost and risk
Only then will you see great pilots evolve and more value added to the role |

9 million in vehicle upgrades and I can say they have pretty decent survivability. Now what I do think they need some WP love more than any other class.
It would really help if Dropships were able to top the charts like tanks.

It isn't something worth the time to really wonder why they do it, you should just simply accept this person is going to be shooting swarms or a forge gun at me. Me and my gunners always crack the joke when we are in the sky killing people saying, "Oh there goes that future AV killer." every time we take out a clone. What works to combat this is communication. To really get the benefits of being a dropship pilot you really need to find a corp that will utilize you in the air, or a good set of people that understand what dropships really can do. When anti vehicle starts flying my way, I call it to a team mate on the ground, to handle the situation. Be it a scout, or squad. It's all about switching the tables. I feel if they want to continue shooting and waiting for me, I will make them pay dearly... It's all about making them fear the dropship. On a side note it would be great that every corp, and player would understand how important the role of air support really is.
1. We can pick up people in skirmish/domination/ambush matches and haul them over across the map in seconds. 2. Extract a squad being over-run in an area before things get too crazy. 3. We can drop in reinforcements in key areas, "example." Rooftops, and other hard to reach places. 4. We can give support fire 5. We can flank the enemy from the sides or rear in seconds. 6. We have an onboard CRU, which unlike a uplink, is much harder to destroy. (also an unlimited spawn amount). 7. We see the entire battlefield from the air and can give information on where the enemy is, and going.
So stay positive and I hope my information has helped you |
