If you want to get really technical with it, in the English language "five hundred and fourteen" means "500 and 14." The number "514" is pronounced "five hundred fourteen." The only time you use the word "and" is where there's a comma (in America) or a dot (in Europe) and you must use hyphens in-between to further clarify..
i.e. 1,514 (or 1.514 in Europe) is one-thousand-and-five-hundred-fourteen.

Wasn't it five fourteen? I think that is what the first test subjects always said and scribbled in blood onto the wall. Would have to look it up again to be sure though. |

Probably. I'm sure a couple of nations do use dots, hence the confusion, but 'European' is a broad group. |

You don't say "and" ever unless it's for the decimal point. However most North American teachers have the "and" bad habit. My grade 11 teacher was the first time I was taught the correct way. |
