If you want to get really technical with it, in the English language "five hundred and fourteen" means "500 and 14." The number "514" is pronounced "five hundred fourteen." The only time you use the word "and" is where there's a comma (in America) or a dot (in Europe) and you must use hyphens in-between to further clarify..
i.e. 1,514 (or 1.514 in Europe) is one-thousand-and-five-hundred-fourteen.

As a European, I object to this. We do not turn thousands into decimals like this.
My apologies, I'm a bit rough when it comes to how the rest of the world does things (i.e. I'm a true American). Maybe it's not all of Europe, but somewhere over in that general area someone uses dots. |
