I am running an experiment where, for the next month, I will only equip BPO items. The purpose of this is two fold. First of all, losing gear becomes costly, especially after a handful of particularly brutal pub stomps. As a scout one good blast from an advanced or prototype AR destroys me, I personally will not be CQC viable in the frequent cluster scramble until I have more than the 2mil SP I currently have. For the sake of my ISK I am going to run freebies for a bit.
The second purpose is to see how much of a difference gear actually makes. In an effort to gauge how much of a difference can be felt I will utilize only my BPO items in my fittings this month and see how the game feels to me. I think September is the perfect month to do this since we will theoretically have a matchmaking system that works and may prevent drastic imbalances in team composition.
I am posting this here to see if anyone else would like to make September a BPO month with me. You can save a lot of ISK if every suit is free, and you can see how gear changes your game and your mindset. |

I've had good luck with two bpo setups i run. The first, a shotgun scout, the second a logistics medium. The scout dies in the blink of an eye, but there is no more satisfying feeling than performing a OHK headshot on a full proto fit, in a suit that costs nothing.
The logi you're doing mostly revive/rep so your shortfall in combat stats is mitigated. |

It's not going to be a good gauge on gear.
Because you're (likely) going to get used to using low end gear, and get good with it. Once you're good with low end gear, you're really not going to notice too much more of a difference when you upgrade, because you're already going to be better than the people using higher tier gear.
I'm not saying gear doesn't help, but dust is still a game where good players will always eat a bad player in most cases, regardless of how much of a gear advantage the bad player has. |

Is this the part where I bust into the thread swinging a giant hammer and shouting "DEATH TO BPOs!!!1" at the top of my lungs?
Because I really, really don't like the cheapening effect that BPOs have on gameplay (including starter fits; I'd rather those at least have some value at least).
I mean, if it cost you ISK or materials or whatever every time you died with a BPO, then it'd be fine. I just hate consequence free soul-bound gear (despite owning multiple BPOs - I got them for the paint jobs, I rarely use them in battle though).
CCP are missing out on a lot of "easy" money because they haven't made a proper appearance customization system yet. That was what BPOs were originally intended to serve as: a temporary measure until applicable paint jobs were introduced. I want to put bloody spikes on my Amarr Assault, paint it brown and pretend I'm one of Sansha's minion cyber-zombie slavers. Can I do that? No. Would I pay for it? Probably, yes. Would it help any kind of gameplay? It might help people recognize each other at a glance.
As for your experiment... Good luck. And I agree with Nova Knife: You're going to get used to the limits of what your BPO suit can and can't do, and that'll make you a better player overall. I always start with a match or two in a cheap militia fit to slip back into the right mentality (I'm a scout primarily) before bringing out the more expensive stuff. |

The 'effects of gear' are most helpful in the sweet spot of drawn out front line battles where the small percentage bonuses in HP and damage done are able to accrue into larger effects over time.
... Utilizing range advantages often negates tier advantage - A) militia sniper rifle effective at head shots; B) mid-long-range hit-and-run kiting allows you to use a range advantage to avoid large amounts of incoming damage minimizing the advantage of higher-tier enemies and, and utilizing successive and continuous regen to negate the impact of their greater buffer.
... And fast and furious CQC is performed nearly as well by low-tier gear as proto [suicide missions where it doesn't matter what tier your shotgun is as long as you shoot them in the back and the extra HP from a proto suit isn't going to save you from the hail of 5x dudes bringing the pain]. |

For the last week I have been using bpos and IV been making bank. I barely get on but I've made 3 mil isk in 15 plus games that's pure profit. I have 6 bpo fits sniper, shoot gunner, shield tank, logistics medic, and a logi for the equipment. Then I have a anti armor starting fit. All my bases are covered I have a bpo for every situation. So yes all month I will be running free fits. U will join you. Also look me up I'll be on Sunday night pacific time. |

Raven Assault Exile Assault Rifle Toxin SMG Militia shield extender x 2 Militia armor plates Militia armor repairer Militia nanohive Militia grenades
Dragonfly Scout Exile Assault Rifle Toxin SMG Militia shield extender Militia profile dampener Militia armor repairer Templar drop uplink Militia grenades
Sever Logistics Exile Assault Rifle Militia shield extender in all high slots (forget how many it has) Militia armor plates Militia armor repairer Templar drop uplink Militia nanite injector Militia armor repairer Militia grenades
Works pretty good - unless I'm using the Logi I am almost always positive in KDR, and am holding my own in WP's |

Spending a while training with BPO fits (and remember, they aren't OP when they're Standard at best, and usually Militia) is a great way to keep pressure on yourself to improve. You need to get pretty good to perform on a consistent level with low-tier gear.
I run BPOs more often than not, but I don't run them exclusively. They're useful when it's obvious you're thrown into the dunce team and you just want to farm some ISK while you're there, but for SP farming, you're often better off bringing at least a cheap non-BPO fitting.
I do rather like my Dragonfly Shotgunner though. So much fun! (and surprisingly durable for a totally free fitting) |

Thank you sir - this is what I use when I run solo - the Dragonfly is for behind enemy lines; the Raven is normal frontline combat or if I need something to be behind enemy lines that has a little more oomph, and the Sever is when I want to change up a little bit in terms of role. I like doing different things to keep from getting tired of the same thing over and over again. |

Using Valor (Valour) Scout, Toxin AR and SMG.
Never thought I pay for stuff on a F2P game (especially for stuff you can already get so easily), but after the armour changes were announced, I actually felt like contributing. Also, I got what would help me grow into the role I'm going for.
I'm under 4mil SP and the BPOs are the core at what I'm going, practicing with various equipment/mods for different tasks. Helpful when you're new and want to get stuck in without having to worry about ISK at the only time you (infantry) are likely to be poor (not that I ever made anything remotely close to a loss with previous MLT/STD fits).
I'm sure one day when I'm wielding proto or whatever, I'll have fond memories of having a suit with spelling that annoyed me or guns that fired doped slugs for the purpose of simply causing extra pain while dying...
In any case for every other good patch CCP release, I'll be buying another merc pack. |

Can you post the setup of your shotgun scout? I have an advanced one with 2 proto shield extenders, and I often need those if I get detected or can't bypass the enemy lines. How do you tank with only a blueprint suit? And don't say "be sneaky". That works often, but not all of the time. |

I used strictly BPO's for about a month prior to the original 'Uprising' Launch. My goal was to save ISK and not much else. I was effective but not particularly dominating. Of course I was playing Logi in my 'Sever' Logistics Suit most of the time so offensive capability was not a priority.
Player skill will always trump gear in this game. There is always someone on the battlefield with less FPS Skill or actual SP than you so you will get kills if that it your goal. Often times I value the inherent bonuses that skills give me more than the items they unlock.
With only 2 million Skill Points, I doubt you will notice much of a difference using just BPO than using the limited gear you already have access to. But good luck in the experiment. |

i never went back to highsec for more than a couple days a month after that. |

I've been running some bpo fits I matches lately, and I've found I do better. I think I'm tricking myself into playing better because I know my gear is weak. I take cover more, I let my shields regen, and I'm learning to make my shots count. |
