1) Do NOT max profile dampening. No higher than level II for now. It doesn't do much for you.
2) Keep runing militia fits and saving your SP until you figure out some more of the game mechanics and decide on a race to run with. Just be advised that things change a lot and what you spec into NOW might get nerfed LATER and you're just going to have to deal with it. It's a harsh world, but will generally work out.
3) With #2 in mind, speccing into core skills as an above poster suggested is tempting, and effective in a conservative way, but you will not be as competitive as you would be in an advanced suit. It's a matter of opinion really.
ok, now that that is settled...
- If you like AR, take the operation skill to V and proficiency to II. You'll thank me later... but you need to be SURE this is the weapon you want to use.
- Shield and armor upgrades III. Armor repair I. Armor plates I. Shield Extension III-V depending on what race you choose. Core upgrades III-IV. Electronics/Engineering II and increase them as needed based on your fitting requirements for primary suit. Get Grenadier III so you can have a packed AV grenade fit and access to M1 locus grenades. Drop Uplinks II and Nanocircuitry II for some decent standard equipment you can use to help the team.
- You need to try militia variants and decide on a racial suit. WHen you decide on the race, spec into the medium frame to III and see if it is what you REALLY want to play. Then you want to get the racial ASSAULT suit up to level III because the advanced suits are cheaper ISK wise and come with decent bonuses. This is going to be your bread and butter until you are well over 10mil SP. Beyond that, it's hard to give concrete advice without knowing what race you want to be. It's a matter of opinion and all are viable - for an AR user the only recommendation I can solidly make is to NOT go Amarr since the racial bonus would be wasted on you. Minmatar is faster but has less HP, Caldari is focused on shield or dual-tanking, and Gallente is focused on armor tanking probably with damage modules in the high slots.
- Best BPO you can have is the Toxin SMG in my opinion, but not if you are sure you want to go flaylock; you mention flaylocks... it's not really my thing and I prefer SMGs especially on sniper fits; your mileage may vary, but I think a flaylock as primary weapon is really really going to be tough on you right now. BPOs are either at the militia level or standard level; honestly not really going to suggest purchasing any ... not many are worth purchasing at this point unless you buy a Mercenary pack and use the ones included in those.
- Speaking of which, yes, a secondary weapon is a must for an assault. It is your primary advantage over logistics ... in a gun fight at close range if you run out of ammo on your AR, you quickly switch to sidearm to finish them off. This is faster than reloading and can save your butt. You do not need to put much SP into sidearms for a while though at your SP level and with a toxin BPO you don't need any SP.
- Your assault suit will be just fine for sniping; no need to cross-spec into scouts.
- If you are not interested in vehicles, DO NOT PUT POINTS IN VEHICLES... OR turrets. Unnecessary.
- Any suit can use a flaylock; logistics suits only have one weapon slot though so it is not recommended on those suits.
... hope that helps. Good luck! |

Um... I'd respectfully have to disagree here. Dampening V means that medium suits can hide from STD scanners, which will probably be the most widely used ones in pub matches. It also means that medium suits have access to PRO dampeners which are required to hide from ADV scanners. And I believe that only medium dropsuits with 3 PRO dampeners, or light dropsuits with two can hide from the regular PRO scanners. With the scanner changes dampeners WILL matter. Can totally see where you are coming from. I've been throwing warnings left and right that people need to start working on their passive radar skills with 1.4 coming. However, with 6mil SP to spend, dampening V is NOT a priority for an AR ASSAULT.
If he was going to be a shotty or knifer or speed hacker or something like that, then sure even on a medium frame. But not for an AR assault. Without getting into the tactics of 'appear weak where you are strong' etc etc., it's not going to matter most times because he's going to be standing next to a heavy who the enemy will easily find if they DO happen to have a scanner.
We'll see how 1.4 plays out,but I foresee visual cues and knowledge of map spawn points continuing to play the primary role in how people find one another in pub matches. Fitting for dampening means an assault is weaker on the frontline against the enemy who is staring right back at him down an iron sight. |
