It had to do with the way ADS was implemented. In the computer code, the scope didn't really "magnify" the image. What happened was the image was drawn as though the player was closer to the target by whatever factor of magnification was being used.
And to me that's appropriate behaviour.
Thing is, *only* the sniper rifle has an actual zooming scope. no other weapon does. ADS does not zoom for anything else. So, an SMG really should not be able to "light something up" beyond 125m (or even that far, really)

There will be a lot of changes. I suspect there will continue to be changes in later releases. Reverse engineering a system in flux could prove very difficult.
A survey of what people have said they wanted for visibility, scanning, the way tagging and additional target information, and zooming work might be more productive.
I believe CCP_Wolfman and his team struggle with this regularly so there is a place to pass comments to. A starting point might be all the posts he has made on the topics. |

You missed the bits that mention that my observations on range are for clear line of sight. When an object is partially obscured, it can mess with the lighting up. Thus, smart snipers position themselves behind partial cover, which makes them not light up as much, if at all.
You're right it does generally happen when objects are somewhat obscured, however occasionally this happens when they're out in the open |

1) Snipers can't currently render past ~450m, how can you validate the "scan" range of a sniper?
