People say the game is dead. Yesterday I saw a buddy of mine playing dust for the 1st time.
Joined his squad and there was a group of his friends.
They were confused on everything about the game. I played about 4 games with them.
In between each match I tried to explain how to and what
*Spec into guns, dropsuits, equipment, Etc *The different gamemodes *And explanation of all the weapons and different racial dropsuits. *The importance of modules *The different roles in the game. *Corporations
If I never showed them any of these things these guys would of quit before even trying.
They really enjoy the game now because I explained how to play to them.
These guys were telling they were bored of call of duty and all that and were just looking for a game to pass the time until COD:Ghost
But this has been discussed before. Dust does a very poor job of showing people how to play the game and how to do all the deep core mechanics. I know some people that jumped into dust once and never learned how to play because they were confused.
And alot of people when you don't know how to do something they automatically quit. Which is the problem Dust is facing this is a very complicated game that some people won't bother to take the time to learn.
Unlike COD and BF Series they've had sequels and they keep the controls the same each game and most the User interface similar and easy to use.

I don't get why they didn't include any hands on tutorials. They really really need to implement that. A lot of people won't feel comfortable going multiplayer until they KNOW THE CONTROLS and HOW TO DO STUFF.

Dust is less than Eve in terms of difficulty. But still, you need to rally together and play with the newberries, get your friends to do the same, and teach them slowly one step at a time. Every merc ought to have one newberry under their wing. I've found an effective learning process to be: -get mic up -ask them what role they fill in other games they play -enter a game with a squad, have newberry use starter fits -demonstrate a variety of weapons over the course of the game -do this for awhile, and then ask the newberry what killed them most and what things they saw that might be interesting to them -give newberry more details on suits and weapons -if newberry is interested in it, walk them through how to spend a few skillpoints on the weapon/dropsuit type they want. (do not specialize it unless getting a logi). This will take awhile. -walk them through buying new stuff in the marketplace -walk them through making their first fit -continue providing support
Also, make sure they know how things are gonna turn out. Combat logis should be Amarr, since logistics skills now are placeholders and only the amarr is going to be meant for combat. They should know that the only snipers in this game are super snipers. Let them know that vehicles are really derpy because of AV. Discourage them properly. And please, for me, tell them not to use an AR. When the other variants come out theres a good chance the AR of now will be changed by alot.
If they go for the long haul, upgrade in order. Adv. weapon. Adv. suit. Adv. Modules. proto weapon/modules. proto suit. --Replace weapon with equipment and get basic suit first if you're a true logi. |

Dust is like trying to solve rocket science. You make some excellent points. I find I have the same problems when explaining this game to my friends as well. This is a complex game...Also most people follow the tldr philosophy so that giant wall of text new players get when entering the store or dropsuit goes unnoticed. They need a more interactive tutorial.... something not so dull and UGH. |

Well just a forum thread linking to a bunch of helpful ones would be fine. You can put mp3s directly on your ps3 and then play the in the background as you walk around. this really wouldn't be difficult, and I pretty much credit Zion Shad with the idea. He was more wanting to make unique faction warfare experiences, but the core idea is the same. |

It does
But these new players do not at all go and look for the answers themselves, they do not look at the full game, they do not try to work out the fitting screen or what the skills do or how the marketplace works

Dust needs an academy. And I don't mean the current "We throw you into games with other noobs" I mean a real one. One where you run through some kind of parkouer and Aura tells you everything. You run to a shooting range where you can equip every weapon and try it out. Then Aura tells you how skilling works. How every dropsuit has its pros and cons and so on. Then you run to an objective which you have to hack while aura explains you how skirmish and domination works. Something like this. |

Okay. I came from CoD and BF3, like every DUST player did and i didn't find the "learning curve" so steep that I couldn't figure it out. The game is actually simple, character development and the matches themselves. I had DUST figured out my first day, its a lot of common sense. I just went through the skill list (no tree at the time) and read everything, and did the same in the market place. The tutorials it does give you, give you plenty of information, you just have to listen.
Now, is the game going to give you player tips? No, because what game does? If you have a repair tool in your equipment, its up to you to figure out how you want to use it. If you're using a shotgun, its up to you to figure out the best way to not suck so bad with it. If you want better character skills, its up to you to figure out which ones are most important to your style of successful play...
I also figured out the bullsh*t too. With most games, you're naive to the stuff that isn't working as intended because you don't know any better. With DUST, it was apparent right away that this was a lesser company running the show and it was going to be rocky. |

They should change a few things here:
- Increase the WP to at least 20000 before they let people graduate the Academy. Teach them about rep tool, nanite, nanohives, uplinks and so on
- Fitting screen should have a proper tutorial for new players
- Academy battles should include some domination matches (objectives) Some insight into MCC damage and all
- Let them have at least 1.5 mil SP uncapped before letting them loose against us |

I imagine they'd want to do these, but they're too afraid to split players up. They don't have the numbers to populate that many areas. |

Because when we started playing Chrome, nobody had black suits until everyone had black suits, grey mares, or white stallions. |

This is exactly what the game needs. I had a friend try the game, he liked it but he had no idea about a lot of the things.
Also the game needs to explain that you can upgrade yourself immensely, using the best suits etc but it comes at a cost. Either time or isk. |

That's also true. But i just wish they would do something about the new players. From a business point of view, if a new customer is not satisfied, heck if most of your new customers are not satisfied, then there is something very wrong with the service. |

My first experience with FPS games was the beta version of Dust...spent maybe a day or so playing it before leaving as I felt as though I was "in over my head."
Came back a little over a month ago out of boredom and created a character...then promptly sunk precious SP maxing out Dropsuit Command. Had no idea I was wasting SP after level 3. Eventually deleted him and started over.
Move forward and now I have a character/setup that I'm relatively happy with. BUT I'm still learning the ins and outs of this game on an almost daily basis. |

This is such ab arrogant and foolish point of view. If the developers of a free game don't care enough to show a new person how the game works, why would you expect the new person to care? Not wanting to figure out a game that appears to be intentionally obtuse doesn't make someone stupid. It just means they value their time more than they value some game that doesn't. |

Dust really needs an in-depth tutorial on how things work. I still remember playing Dust for the first time I and was extremely confused.
I still remember doing some dumb things like:
-spec into heavy suits thinking that was the best suit in the game after academy I got killed multiple times and deleted it.
-used a repair tool thinking that it would repair my dropsuit then I realized I can't repair myself.
-I always used militia locus grenade since I tried to save SP I didn't realize that if you use locus grenade you get one extra granade.
-I didn't upgrade my dropsuit engineering and the other thing so when I got my protosuit it was terrible so it mostly had militia mods.
-I created a total of FIVE characters I deleted them since I made bad SP choices.
and the last thing I remember is staying in the marketplace and skillbooks for about 3 hours thinking what is the best thing in the game and I was comparing dropsuits too.
fortunately I was determined enough on learning this game. |

I think that if we have an vested interest in maintaining the game, veterans should occasionally drop into blueberry squads and show em the ropes. It wouldn't take much, just a couple quick pointers.
Is there a corp for new players that is maintained by vets? I might consider starting an alt to do just that. |
