after about an hour of searching at the gamescom i finally found their stand (EVE and DUST514) hidden in a small corner of a very big exhibition hall... there were like 6 people (sadly all EVE player) and one dev (who also was only responsible for EVE)...
he couldnt tell me new infos about dust514 or further updates (but he was a nice guy :-P)...... it was more of an EVE recruitment camp.
so all in all i was very disappointed from CCP's presence at the gamescom and i left that stand with the feeling that even CCP doesnt care about dust..... :/ |

Lol, So we were told by CCP to listen to the word on the street about gamescon for an exciting news announcement and.........
TaDa nothing
According to OP the word on the street was:-
CCP only pumped enough resources into allowing 1 EvE guy go, who had no real ideas about dust, but he took some eve players to make the numbers up.
So this marketing exercise was purely to say look we were here in the cheapest and less resource intensive way possible.
Sweet job CCP enjoyed following your twitter feed for this exciting announcement, but we already know you couldn't organise a **** up in a brewery, still thanks for confirming it |

Generally a company only pushes marketing when they are about to release a huge new piece of content, such as a major expansion, or a new game. Until then marketing tends to be rather quiet in general.
Think on this, how big was the World of Warcraft section, or the RIFT section, or the (INSERT MMO TITLE HERE) sections? Were they jam packed with developers gushing forth information? For better or worse, CCP is going to market DUST much like they have EVE, which means alot of focus on grass roots (word of mouth) growth, and a small community that is fiercely dedicated to the game. (EVE has ~500k players, and has been getting that by slowly growing in pop each year.) It seems they have a similar plan for DUST with only around a few tens of thousands (or a hundred thousand) players, but still a community that is loyal to the game, and will buy enough AURUM items to continue to make the game profitable.
In this respect, it's a much more low-key approach, but it has worked for EVE since they have been (except for Incarna) budgeting properly around that kind of estimate, and growing. Which seems to be a stark contrast to many other MMOs that aim to be "WoW-killers" and plan for millions of players, then do miserably when that lofty goal proves unattainable after a few months. |
