Hello. I would like to input my feedback on our maps, then give suggestions on how our maps can be improved. The main purpose of this topic is to highlight the flaws of our current maps, and suggest ways to improve on these flaws. The major flaw is the lack of creativity, and a deprivation of strategical features each map has.
"Deprivation of Strategical Features"
DUST 514, as well as her much larger counterpart, EVE, are very strategical games without a doubt. This strategy seems to not be present in our current maps. I estimate that 70-90% of each map lacks activity, and what I mean by this is that these sections of the 'battlefield' do not occur to have anyone actively there, or any firefights taking place in these locations. It's quite obvious, every map has a 'base' and a lonely, boring outlying area where no one cares to go. Why? Because there's no reason. What reasons can there be that can make people move out into these regions? Strategical features.
These strategical features are what makes a true battlefield. There are a few suggestions I have.
Separation of Null Cannons
Null cannons are relatively close on most maps. Usually about 2 or 3 being inside a base. Most activity happen around and at these null cannons, and for obvious reasons. So, by spreading them out, we can suffice a larger active area.
Sniper Positions
Yes there are a few sniping positions on each map, but they are all extremely predictable. You'll find snipers getting on dropships, fly to the border mountains, plant a drop uplink, and snipe away. Sniping positions are a very crucial key to a fighting force on any battlefield, this is especially including real life. The team that can secure the best, and the more amounts of sniping position, would definitely lead a team to victory, or at least provide a substantial advantage against the other team.
Easier Vehicle Access Areas
Rather than having a road run right through a fort and around it, maybe make more complex road systems. A more complex road system, will create more complex probabilities. What I mean by that is, if we have more complex 'easy access' areas for vehicles, we can find that vehicles will not take pathetic damage from sliding off the smallest of hills, or being tossed around, bumped into buildings or hills. This can also tie in with what I'm about to say next.
Interactive Strategic Features
This is a feature I definitely would like to see implemented. This can call for a more interactive environment, and a strategic one as well. I will provide a list, and a brief description of each item listed.
Interactive Gates - Gates in which you can open and close. Self-explanatory, just imagine the possibilities for such a simple thing. These gates can be closed upon a team capturing a fortified area, keeping the enemy team out. In turn, this gate can be destroyed.
Mounted Turrets - Mounted turrets where you can find on a wall, on top of a tower, or in an outpost. I'm not talking about those bulky, giant blasters, but simple mounted turrets where one can operate and unleash devastation upon those trying to get close. A great strategic feature, where a team who can seize such a target can use it to their advantage. But be warned, turret operators are easy targets. Especially for those snipers hiding in those sniping positions.
Repair Stations - A station, preferably one a match, that can repair dropsuits. You'll slowly accumulate shield and armor while standing in its radius. This will be very beneficial for the team who has seized this.
If anyone would like to add on to this list, please do so. Now on to the next segment of this topic.
"Lack of Creativity"
Us in real life are finding more interesting planets than what I'm finding in DUST. There is so little creativity involved in this aspect of the game. To me it's all the same. I'd like to throw out suggestions.
Ocean Worlds - Or at least an archipelago. This can introduce naval combat. Snow/Ice Worlds Lava/Volcanic Worlds Underground maps - For a no aerial match. Mountainous Worlds Jungle Worlds Inhabited Worlds - aggressive lifeforms?
If you would like to add to this list as well, please do so.
Now wrapping it up, the main point of this is to provide suggestions to CCP, who will hopefully read, to create more exciting environments. Having great maps will definitely make this game much more appealing, without a doubt. DUST has so many capabilities and potential, why not unleashing these capabilities and potential on more suitable battlefields that can live up to everyone's DUST dream? |

Additional information I would like to add.
Note: some of these features may or may have been suggested before/confirmed in later updates. I will list them anyway.
Weather - This has been suggested a lot, but I want to provide my own two cents. I want to provide a list of weather phenomenon, and how they can affect the battlefield besides being aesthetically pleasing.
Precipitation - The rain cycle can differ greatly from planet to planet. Rain will generally reduce our range of sight, and that'll be the most basic affect of it. The visibility can be factored by how heavy it is raining. Another factor that we can put into rain is what liquid is raining. Water will do nothing much, as I'm sure our equipment is strong enough to endure liquid water from tearing up our electronics. Methane can have a chance of exploding flammable projectiles in mid air. Acid rain can cause damage to dropsuits and vehicles and/or destroy equipment. Snow can further reduce visibility and lead to blizzards. Hail/Sleet can damage and reduce visibility.
Lightning - Lightning can strike and harm dropsuits, vehicles, and equipment. Can be like mother nature's EMP. Can occur in storms, or as dry lightning. Produces thunder.
Cloudy - I can only think of aesthetic features for this one.
Blizzards - Can impede movement, as well as all other effects that snowing gives.
Dust storm - Can reduce visibility.
Fog - Can reduce visibility.
Wind - Can impede movement, by slowing dropsuits. Can also impede maneuverability of dropships, and other aerial vehicles by throwing them off course and making them unstable. Can also lead to dust storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Wind can also change path of certain projectiles. Can also be in the form of gusts.
Tornadoes - Can lift up clones and vehicles, and can take down dropships. Potentially destroying or damaging everything in its path.
Hurricanes - Extremely high winds, including precipitation and possible lightning.
Thunder - If thunder is load enough, can possibly stun clones by impeding movement and hearing for a couple of seconds.
Solar Phenomenon
Magnetic Storms - Can cause auroras, and disrupt equipment, sensors, radars, modules, and other electronics.
Meteors - Can be aesthetically pleasing, from just a meteor shower, or to something more serious. A large enough meteor may hit and insta-kill every clone, equipment, vehicle (except maybe dropships, but will be dealt lots of damage), and other damageable entities/objects. (seems OP, but something like this could be fitting. Just a suggestion.)
Eclipse - Extremely dark.

Galvan Nized wrote:Agreed that null cannons could be more spread out in some maps but not to the point it will kill CQB. A very good map for the spread of null cannons is Ashland. The cannons are everywhere and little of that map goes unused but still promotes CQB.
Snipers have lots of positions now, granted I know what you mean. Now it's get to the edge of the bowl or find a really tall tower/building or do this all from the redline. Sniping is way too powerful now but is very boring. Give less points that have LOS across the entire map and more enterable buildings over looking some of the points to promote more motion and less camping. Plus more enterable buildings and less access to roofs unless it also is accessible through the building.
Agreed on a more complex road system. Also make going off road much more punishing than it is now, as it stands LAVs and tanks don't even need to use the roads as the entire map is completely flat and can drive most anywhere unimpeded. Hence why murder taxis are so devastating.
Wait until we get "deployable" installatons and we'll have more of that fort feel granted we'll probably never have gates or mounted turrets for the fact that it will make defense too easy. I suggest you play Starhawk it's Fort building was down right epic.
Everything else would be cool but I could wait for the flashy stuff if the design was better.
But I agree that the maps in this game are at best terribly uninspired leading to exploitable gameplay and downright boring matches.
Yes, more accessible buildings would be great. And I agree with you on "...and less access to roofs unless it also is accessible through the building." Most rooftops are accessible by a ladder. Most of the time it's not even worth climbing that ladder. Getting killed while climbing a ladder is not fun.
On the topic of roads, exactly.
Hopefully so. The gate part, I believe, won't make defending too much easier. The gate can destroyed, and also maybe make these gates slow to close/open. This can be a downside, because if you have teammates outside the fort it'll be hard for them to get in. And of course dropships can fly over them and drop people inside, and closing the gate can be risky, because in the event of a breach, there would be almost no where to go, and you trap yourself in a base to get killed. So gates do have there pros and cons.
And yes I have to agree with you on that one.
'Uninspired' that's a perfect way to put it, because it does seem that the developers were uninspired. Group strategy is lacking, and for one reason is that because the maps don't allow it.
Thank you for your feedback.

2. Sniper Positions. There should be more sniper positions and they should be accessible from the ground IN ADDITION to the type we already have. You shouldn't have to use snipers to kill snipers all the time.
3. Easier Vehicle Access Areas. This sounds incredibly difficult and complicated to implement, while it would be nice, I'm not feeling it. On an uninhabited planet that is being used for very specific purposes, direct simple roads would make the most sense, no?
4. Interactive Strategic Features. Yes and no.
4a. Sounds great 4b. Mounted turrets. No. We have blasters, we have railguns, we have missile turrets, and they will eventually be capable of being deployed from orbit. I think the weapon you are thinking of is called a "Heavy Machine Gun", you can even move while using them. I think it would be more fitting to have places you can mount your HMG to be more accurate if you absolutely need this feature. It shouldn't be something anyone can use it just doesn't really appeal to the EvE universe if you don't mind me saying so. 4c. Absolutely not. That would be broken af, we already have deployable equipment that heals armor. That would break the game and get abused.
5. Lack of Creativity. Most of these will come eventually except for naval combat. Battle on ocean planets would take place at the ocean bottom, they said so at EvE fanfest this year. Ocean/Lava/Ice/Gas/PLASMA planets will eventually be implemented, though they are nowhere near being implemented soon(tm). An underground map sounds good. Jungle map sounds good. Snow maps already exist, but I know what you mean. There are no serious aggressive lifeforms in the galaxy seeing as advanced life is rare, and if there were, a basic mammal wouldn't bother a heavy. Side note: Planets in nullsec (0.0 space) are already uninhabited.
6. Weather. Oh HELL yes. I think they should be mostly aesthetics though except for reduced visibility/impeded movement (scouts would be good here if they could treck through the frozen abyss with speed while everyone else is tarred down) Tornadoes sound badass but I'm not so sure they should be able to just oneshot a 2m isk dropship, pulling things around would be nice but the Unreal Engine probably wouldn't be able to handle those kinds of physics I would presume. I think something cool in a thunderstorm would be HUD randomly deactivated and not showing ammo/health.
7. Solar Phenomenon. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.
8. Gravity. They said they plan on eventually having unique gravity for each planet, or at least hinted at it at fanfest. Be sure to remind them in a year.
Overall, good ideas. I like this post. Thumbs up.
2. Agreed.
3. Basically what Galvan stated earlier, "Agreed on a more complex road system. Also make going off road much more punishing than it is now, as it stands LAVs and tanks don't even need to use the roads as the entire map is completely flat and can drive most anywhere unimpeded. Hence why murder taxis are so devastating." He stated it pretty good.
4b. My idea for mounted turrets is basically like a vehicle turret mounted on top of a building, or any other part of the battlefield where it feels it should be implemented at. But I understand what you mean, and I haven't thought it through enough to see that HMGs would definitely not be benefited by this. The ability to mount a machine gun would be cool. Maybe if it's mounted HMGs can run a tad faster, and have more energy. Having it mounted could also allow you to probably share your machine gun, even if you die, it could still be there, and others may be able to use it to their advantage. Just a suggestion. |

And for the statements concerning it may take awhile, I'm sure it will. But I hope that CCP can at least read our suggestions, so that whenever these maps do come out, we can hope by taking our information and input that they would be able to develop quality maps.
I also believe that more 'vertical maps' would be better as well. |

Jebediah Mayhew wrote:I love all these ideas. My constant fear is that Dust will become like WoW in the sense that it will be just huge stat changes every patch instead of adding to the world.
I see the value of stat changes, but this is the sort of that interests me and keeps me coming back.
Exactly, it's great to have stat changes (if it's for the good). But the environment we fight on, fight for, the environment that can keep us alive, is one of the most important aspects of the game, if not the most important. This IS a core mechanic of the game, this is the land we fight on. If developed poorly, we will all become disinterested in such a game that had boundless amounts of potential. |

One aspect I really want to highlight is PvE.
Imagine defending your planet from native sentient creatures. Just having people patrol your base to fend off these creatures. Possibly even add these into lobby games as well. These will be really great additions to maps.
Why not use creatures to your advantage? In warfare today we have used animals from dogs, horses, and dolphins. Why not be able to use sentient creatures on these maps? Maybe we can ride some kind of slaver hound into battle, or use them to sniff out explosives (which is definitely useful for capturing null cannons, since that's a popular place to put them). |

Drones would be really cool. Especially in urban environments. |
