As an assault rifle user myself I can say i use it because of how effective it is in most situations. I am a team oriented player but I often outlast or just get separated from my squad do to my playstyle; which leaves me on my own against one or more opponents. To be effective in such a situation I chose to run an assault rifle since it is effective against different types of enemies; is it best in all situations? In my opinion no. (In before Steve shows up for his anti AR chanting....) The AR can be outdone by other weapons in their situations; examples being SCR against shields, MD against armor (a little too effective? We shall see after the armor update, patience) etc. etc.
Another thing that helped in my choice to continue to use the AR is none of the weapons we have right now feel like something I'd enjoy using for a long period of time; I tried the SCR and liked it, but it just didn't feel like my type of weapon. I might try the laser rifle next but other then that I can't see myself switching my primary weapon to anything else. I don't enjoy AOE weapons, they seem a bit cheap to me. I also feel the only time to use a shotgun in video games is when zombies are involved, using them against other people limits me to CQC (as all shotguns should) and I don't enjoy that as much. I would be a sniper in this game... If it wasn't so damned easy; I haven't used one above the starter fit since uprising started but from what I can tell nothing has changed, so no thanks. HMG? I'm not going heavy till the Gallente heavy is out so I think I'll put that one on hold.
So until a new weapon is introduced or I get bored enough to try a weapon we have now and it totally blows me away, I can't see myself changing anytime soon.

I have another question for you: doesn't this go against combat in eve completely, where it takes much skill to be good with your ship and if you don't have the right ship for the battle you're ******?
Well if everything like shields and armor were balanced against eachother, all basic content promised upon release was included, and this wasn't a lobby shooter till further notice, I'd maybe agree with you; sadly this is what we have. When we have a tactics filled balanced between roles game where combat isn't so restricted this argument won't fly.
Also you and I both know this is coming so I'll get it out of the way, this isn't EvE this is an FPS. Two totally different beasts and we aren't even really sharing the same universe yet, just the same setting and backstory in my opinion.

Vae Victis You are more right tan I wish you were, if only CCP had a bigger budget, development team ETC. Imagine if this game was developed by DICE in partnership with CCP, oh the potential this idea had.
I don't really think something like DICE is the answer; I enjoyed BF3 when I first got it and only stopped playing once all the DLC was out and I got to try it all out. Yesterday I went back to BF3 and it has become just another twitch shooter; with the added displeasure of player run servers (If you wanna know why this sucks so bad go watch Battlefield Friends episodes on Admins) I hate twitch shooters, they aren't fun and simply frustrate me whether or not I'm doing well or getting my ass kicked.
A bigger budget and development team would be nice though, maybe in time we will see this come to fruition
