I see little reason for there to be even be a straight upgrade past standard level grenades. My guess is they're gonna treat it the same way they did proto contact nades, increased damaged means a smaller blast radius. Seems fair enough to me.

Here's something you haven't taken into account- they're just miniature versions of ARs; so like ARs, the community doesn't give 2 ***** about how powerful they happen to be.

As for future FoTM? Hmm, well it depends. - New laser scope will most certainly make it easier to use/aim, which may draw too much attention to the weapon. We know as of recently since a few started to actually use it, that the LR is not useless but that the sights are just so terrible. - Plasma cannon as it is now, sucks. But it definitely is going to get a buff sometime soon, which could make it a prime target for abuse (and we all know how this community feels about explosive weapons). - Core nades? I'm actually surprised people are crying about it now, they are immensely devastating granted you can cook properly. And can OHK most suits in it's 7.2m blast radius (it's also incredibly useful for air-bursting due to it's range). - Shotguns? I've seen some extremely deadly players using shotguns, regularly getting 30+ kills in ambush. But I see even more players doing terrible with it, so dunno what the deal is. But it has the potential for FoTM - AR's? Well, these are the FoTD (flavor of the decade) and will remain so till the end of the time.

But a SMG that costs 40k + and so much CPU-PG to equip is supposed to be good. Problem is that people confuse good with OP, because in the eyes of the defeated, they never were defeated because of lack of skill,but because the enemy was using a superior-cheap weapon/tactic. Look at me, i whine of LAV all the time...

A PRO Amarr Assault has 3 High, 3 Low, and even the shield-tankin Caldari Assault also has 3 low (and the Amarr gets a "laser" bonus, no special armor bonus) (Cal-Logis have more low slots than Amarr Assaults as well). If anyone can go lop-sided with the new armor changes, it's the 5-low Gallente Logi or 4-low Amarr Sentinel. That being said, that's supposed to be the point, right? Up until now, the high slots have been mostly more desirable for damage and shield-extender dominance. The fact an Amarr Sentinel had 4-low slots was mostly seen as less desirable than the Basic Heavy that could stack more damage mods. If armor tanking becoming more viable becomes a "thing", then it's a net good for actually having both sets of slots be desirable/viable. The commando is the only suit that gets an armor-plate bonus, and it only gets 1 low slot at PRO.
