Noc Tempre wrote:This is just a reflection on what I came to DUST looking for and how it has so far failed to accomplish. It had the potential of AAA in concept, but the execution was D-listers running the show and the proof is the state of the game now. I can think of three features that were uniquely DUST 514 that made it worthy of attention and honestly, connection to eve wasn't one of them. That was always a gimmick.
1) Multiple genres of game modes, all with a persistent character
You had promises of the same "merc" hoping between npc missions, horde defense, arena battles, territory management, and promises for more over time, all with a character that persisted. A simple parallel is if CoD single player, multiplayer, spec ops, and zombies all shared the same character with rewards from winning granting progression in all, not just one
2) Infinite map variation
The promise of never having the same fight twice. We were told to expect PGE maps, player selected facilities tied to the importance of the map, player designed defenses, even radically different environments. None of that happened, laughably DUST has less unique map area, let alone detail, than a typical CoD fare - don't even bother comparing to BF3 or PS2 (area being literal by the way).
3) Deep, tactical FPS mechanics
Capacitor, overheating, ammo types, 5 types of ewar, remote repairing, resists vs health vs regen ... all were pitched as uniquely DUST takes on the FPS genre. And best of all, we were expecting to be able to mix them up, classless customization. In the end, CoD: BO2 has more meaningful customization, and usable equipment before you even touch on the kill-streaks. After all, the OBs were always about appeasement to EVE, to mollify all the money funneled from the sub fees.
As it stands now, DUST is just DPS and HP, weapons are silly easy to control (but too much RBS), and none of the deeper combat, tactical, nor stategic options are there. PS2 has cloaks, jetpacks, turrets, overshields, hots, explosives, sensors ... the tactical choices in DUST 514 are spartan compared to CoD, let alone the real genre competition for MMOFPS. And what we have to look forward to is ... fixed aiming and balanced weapons, assuming everything goes perfectly for once.
So without even the failure of EVE interaction, DUST doesn't even ASPIRE to live up to what made it "the game to watch" since 2009 and that makes me sad. A BF2142 third-rate knock-off with less depth and polish and a wholly unsustainable monetization scheme.
Can DUST aspire to greatness again? All I see is plans to continue down the "me-too" path. I challenge you to all to show evidence (not speculation or wishful thinking) that it may yet become a unique game worth playing.
I think you've nailed the basics of why Dust514 has failed.
CCP failed to ship any single item on this list in anything approaching an interesting or even acceptable state.
What shipped was a thin version of bf2142 riddled with bugs and a work in progress/ seat of the pants integration with Eve.
I think what you have missed is the 4th leg of what serious gamers expected. The Eve link is currently a "gimmick" but it had a serious purpose originally.
4) Team based battles against serious organized opponents 24x7.
In most fps shooters full organized teams facing each other are the exception not the rule. The Eve link of Dust514 should have created an environment in which organized teams had the influence of Eve politics, economics and plain old griefing to drive more or less constant fighting.
We should have had a way to login to Dust, ask for a spot in group in corp or a chat channel of friends and get a fight with your TEAM that you could play for as many matches as you wanted (you need a working featureful FW for this at a minimum).
Planetary Conquest killed this game with annoying timers, scheduled fights and having to pay ISK to actually fight with each other. So many things wrong with the CCP concept of "eve-lite" in Dust that it's a long long topic of it's own.
Dust has none of the key features to make it a unique and interesting game. No particular reason for why you can tell your friends they should play it.
Dust is bad and CCP should feel bad.

That is your reply? Blind faith or GTFO? It is deliberately a trap statement; there is no rational dialogue that can follow by accepting your premise as reasonable. I don't think he's saying you should have blind faith, I think he's pointing out the fact that you seem to have none at all. You have, however, addressed an even more important point that there seem to be only two acceptable viewpoints on this game: Blind Faith. No Faith. Life is full of shades of gray, people. Is it really that hard to keep it to the middle?
Is this a serious comment dude?
What does "faith" have to do with this?
Noc laid out some pretty clear pillars of what -even you- expected out of this game yet is nowhere in sight.
Which of the four pillars that he laid out do you think are going to actually arrive IN GAME in the next 12 months?
