It had the potential of AAA in concept, but the execution was D-listers running the show and the proof is the state of the game now. I can think of three features that were uniquely DUST 514 that made it worthy of attention and honestly, connection to eve wasn't one of them. That was always a gimmick.
1) Multiple genres of game modes, all with a persistent character
You had promises of the same "merc" hoping between npc missions, horde defense, arena battles, territory management, and promises for more over time, all with a character that persisted. A simple parallel is if CoD single player, multiplayer, spec ops, and zombies all shared the same character with rewards from winning granting progression in all, not just one
2) Infinite map variation
The promise of never having the same fight twice. We were told to expect PGE maps, player selected facilities tied to the importance of the map, player designed defenses, even radically different environments. None of that happened, laughably DUST has less unique map area, let alone detail, than a typical CoD fare - don't even bother comparing to BF3 or PS2 (area being literal by the way).
3) Deep, tactical FPS mechanics
Capacitor, overheating, ammo types, 5 types of ewar, remote repairing, resists vs health vs regen ... all were pitched as uniquely DUST takes on the FPS genre. And best of all, we were expecting to be able to mix them up, classless customization. In the end, CoD: BO2 has more meaningful customization, and usable equipment before you even touch on the kill-streaks. After all, the OBs were always about appeasement to EVE, to mollify all the money funneled from the sub fees.
As it stands now, DUST is just DPS and HP, weapons are silly easy to control (but too much RBS), and none of the deeper combat, tactical, nor stategic options are there. PS2 has cloaks, jetpacks, turrets, overshields, hots, explosives, sensors ... the tactical choices in DUST 514 are spartan compared to CoD, let alone the real genre competition for MMOFPS. And what we have to look forward to is ... fixed aiming and balanced weapons, assuming everything goes perfectly for once.
So without even the failure of EVE interaction, DUST doesn't even ASPIRE to live up to what made it "the game to watch" since 2009 and that makes me sad. A BF2142 third-rate knock-off with less depth and polish and a wholly unsustainable monetization scheme.
Can DUST aspire to greatness again? All I see is plans to continue down the "me-too" path. I challenge you to all to show evidence (not speculation or wishful thinking) that it may yet become a unique game worth playing.
