Without the goodwill CCP gathered from EVE, would Dust even have players right now? A development company, no matter how much money backing them, but without the fans following them, would there even be 200 players left?
CCP are cashing in on something that took them years to get. |

CCP are cashing in on something that took them years to get. But it will be over, there is always a limit, Dust needs to change soon. Not TM, but soon.
What are you talking about? There is change coming imminently; I can guarantee that this game will get better SOON-¬.

Are you saying if CCP didn't have EvE would Dust still be trying to stay alive?
Maybe - but I doubt it. It's only because of the EvE interaction and possibility of effecting that universe someday that I think a lot of people keep hope. |

Its hard to say, some communities were built in dust and might have been enough for those players to stick around. I asked a similar question not long ago and had it pointed out to me that a bunch of dust players started playing eve.
That said? If dust wasnt set in New Eden I would have left long ago. Iv left better games for less pressing issues. |

I think it would be very much alive, possibly even better. I only say that as at the moment they are trying to create Ground Infantry Equivalents of Battleships. Which is very difficult to do accurate when the two are so very, very different.
I mean understandably, I'm sure the reputation from EVE Online helped boost word on this game, and yes even got some/many EVE Players into the game.
But in all honestly, the majority of my Corp. had never even heard of EVE Online, most of us a Console Gamers. The thing that brought us to even was it is Free-To-Play, then upon further investigation we grew to like the game. We loved the idea of Corp. v Corp. for plant control. It wasn't until recently many of my guys realized what EVE was.
Perhaps a lesser player base at the moment, but the thing with DUST 514 it's FREE and constantly changing/improving. People will always come back to it even to just have a look, and they will bring their friends. Some will even stay. |

CCP are cashing in on something that took them years to get. But it will be over, there is always a limit, Dust needs to change soon. Not TM, but soon. Basically you could probably make a very strong argument that if it wasn't for EVE money this DUST mess is completely unsustainable and if you read between the lines of the CPM statement in a whole world of trouble. |

Eve took a long time to get where its at and its still evolving. Unfortunately I don't think the FPS community is nearly as patient and thus, without CCPs track record of steady improvement Dust would probably not be faring too well right now.
That being said, I'm not certain they would have released this game in its current state if this was their only pony to bet on. |

They probably would have a lot less.
Ironically though, Dust is eroding some of those Eve players goodwill in the company at large, and endangering Eve subscriptions. Probably though, that's less of an effect than the bump in subscriptions they have received due to curious Dust players.

In an alternate universe where something like Dust existed in a superficially similar manner and EVE didn't... well, the company practices that allowed this to happen couldn't exist. If they did it would crash and burn so goddamn hard.
The security net of EVE is what has allowed Dust so far to stay afloat but also what enabled it to be bungled without immediately recognised consequence. It laid off a lot of the pressure to engage the Dust consumers, to make this in the short or long term sustainable under it's own power. Bad design has been rampant, many critical issues have persisted (in some cases not even acknowledged), mistakes have been repeated, the community largely alienated...
...and that's been going on since before Uprising. It's just that when Uprising hit Dust got critically panned by everyone, it was a reality check sorely needed. The procedure, the planning, the design process... it needs to change for the better if Dust is to change for the better. Is this happening? Let's hope so.
However the 400 WP Academy is a ****-poor start in regaining the confidence of the remaining playerbase and actually accommodating growth. |

Even if only 10% of eve players are logging in on dust (just to support the numbers) there would be around 3500-5000 players peak, hey thats funny that is our current peak numbers. Loool
Looks like 10% of eve players are keeping this game from having the plug pulled.

Probably not if Dust didn't have the support coming from Eve players.
However, that is not the case because the vast majority of the Dust players who helped CCP pioneer this game are Eve Online players. Some of which who have been playing Eve Online since the day Eve launched in 2003.
You are right that Dust needs to change soon however. But CCP does have plans that include the following:
1. Open, player-controlled market. 2. Industry 3. Gladiator mode 4. Racial symmetry
etc.
The sooner these features come, the better. |

If it weren't for all the potential that comes from tying into the EVE universe (taking contracts from EVE Corps, procuring resources from PVE missions etc.) I would leave. I thought the whole point is this isn't suppose to be just another lobby shooter. If that is the case we can expect no more specialised suits beyond assault ,logi and heavys (okay fine, scouts as well even though there is little point in them right now it seems).
I mean DUST should have its own **** goin on for it I guess, no game should be reliant on another game to be fun, though I think when things like PVE are introduced a link and reason for EVE players to care should be included within it from the start.
It's why I get frustrated when people compare the whole game to MAG or PS/2 - there is inspiration to be taken from them, but DUST is going for something completely different and unique in scale and context - or at least I hope so, because it will fail miserably if t tries to compete on the same playing field as them. |

Maybe - but I doubt it. It's only because of the EvE interaction and possibility of effecting that universe someday that I think a lot of people keep hope. Yep. Insane amounts of patience and hope. Dreams of complex meaninfgul co-op PVE, open world Nullsec planetary battles, walking-in-station assassination missions, wondering how awesome MTACs are going to be, infantry assaults within capital ships in the middle of eve fleet battles, true economic integration and manufacturing of all gear used by Dust clones, space-to-atmospheric transition where specialized EvE frigates/fighters are deployable from space to the planet and flown first person as a fighter bomber / combat flight simulator with an eve-side pilot and dust-side gunners
... the vision we have in our heads of this game being awe inspiring keeps us at the weekly grind so that WHEN those things happen, we will have the skillpoints to do whatever we want to do... think about pirate faction dropsuits that require Gallente Assault IV and Minmatar Assault IV just to unlock...
... think about the Five-Year-Vision CCP has for EvE where nullsec alliances can dump trillions of ISK to BUILD THEIR OWN STARGATES and discover new star systems!!! The possibilities for meeting alien races and requiring Dust infantry to fight back hordes of "Alien Race X" both in-space, guarding star gates, and on new alien wars a-la "Starship Troopers" (da movie...) are insanely open-ended.
This is a long-term game that will be constantly growing. We are unfortunately witnessing its infancy and it's still shitting all over itself right now.
Sigh. So yeah. Obvious EvE player here; OP may have a point. |
