Sup guys,
I just specced a little bit into the ads and man.....how do you guys kill people with that front turret? From my first few flights it seems like 3rd person is the way to go so you don't nose-dive into fiery death. My problem is I can't see anything under the nose of my ship in 3rd person so it's kinda like.....umm wtf?? How are these guys doing this and getting kills? lol
Any suggestions out there from experienced pilots?
Thx

I thought they were near impossible to shoot at first. It gets better with practice. I never really use the 1st person view. I've just got good at hovering and shooting a tad in front or below me. Practice on the yellow installations at the beginning of the match with an accelerated missile turret (works OK on infantry too). |

As roofer said, it takes practice. Depending in what you fly and how you fit it, and what turret you use, an active scanner in a high slot can be a good investment, it'll show up all enemies (even the ones you can't see) as red chevrons, you can just aim for those. |

Rgr that. Ya i just have all extenders in the high slots for survival atm. My aim sux pretty bad, once i get better i'll def throw a scanner in a slot. I just seem to be overrunning the targets and having issues with keepin her steady but like you guys said, practice will help I'm sure. |

Look at https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&find=unread&t=94051 for lots of help with dropships. Im new to them myself, but assuming your using missiles, what was sugested to me and works well is to get your cross hair below the enemy, and the cross hair will start to drift upwards, fire as soon as it turns red and you should have some luck :P |

As everyone else has said, it takes practice. But what also helps is to stay parallel with the ground. Going vertical blocks your view almost entirely. Not that i have any practice with ADS, i'm just a standard DS pilot, but by the end of 2x SP, i will have the Python |

I can second being a poor mofo. also get used to knowing where your missiles are going to end up in staffing runs one of the best things to learn is how to lead
on a side note besides just extenders res amplifiers will do you wonders. |

I tried both scattered ion cannons and various proto missiles and I would chose either the fragmented or accelerated missiles, they take some getting used to but they demolish both infantry and vehicles. |

Cycled missile turrets help a lot. You don't need great precision with those, just aim in the general direction. Less damage per missile, but worth it. |

1.) Enter First Person 2.) Grab an Accelerated or Fragmented Missile 3.) Find Target 4.) Point downwards towards target and start rotating/orbiting around target 5.) ? 6.) Profit

How to you keep lift and on target when your pointing down in 1st person? Cuz I fail at this miserably |

You orbit, you get a certain angle and keep moving in a direction, you end up orbiting what your looking at, can't stay in it orvevr though. |

you have to time a 180 turn over the target where your now moving backwards and up, with the target now in foward sight, you have a few seconds before your upward/backwward momentum runs out. |

Nice tip tebow. I watched a good ads pilot doin this last week, it looks like the way to go for me. He ended up 14-0, i was impressed. I tried it in the next match and it was definitely stable enuff to shoot in the sweet spot you mention for a few seconds. My problem was there was a good forge gunner out which spoiled my practice. I had to put my expensive toy away~which actually happens quite a bit

yea feel u there, if your team on the ground isn't pushing hard it's dificult to do anything useful with a dropship, if the red infantry is unopposed they're free to fire AV at you. if your team is good they will put pressure on the enemy AV, giving you some leeway to do an air assault. if your team is redlined it's usually pretty hopeless to fly. if your team owns at least 2 points, i prefer 3 out of 5, then you can have a better chance.
the 180 1rst person shot is pretty hard, i usually fire from 3rd person, i've gotten hover kills but it's some guess work, i've also got kills doing a high speed passes in 3rd person, i dont think i actually have a 1rst person kill yet. i just unlocked XT-1 missles, i was getting some fragmented missile kills with AT-1. i've been flying alot for the last few days but it has cost me a lot of isk.
yea and 14/0 with nose cannon is amazing |

Few advices which should help too that I noticed while playing with the ADS:
Practice in ambush matches, where people are more concerned about infantry encounters. Less AV. Forge guns are really the thing to watch out for. Just watch out when you call it in, reddots can be close by.
I do agree the best turret is the missile. I use fragmented XT, it has a bigger splash radius, which help. I shoot in 3rd person 90% of the time and I must say it is a bad design having to guess aim. This is where splash damage hurts.
Best maps are the ones with center outpost with big buildings, giving lots of cover to your ADS, easy escape route. practice flying inside those big outpost, slowly and stable. Practice escape route and manoever. Roll over building, walls etc. Works alot for me.
Try to not fly out in the open too much, railgun and forge will love it. |

i generally use 1st person view when im in a dogfight, thats when it shines most. In a 1 on 1 dogfight i usually win with it as an experienced pilot i must say the secret to staying alive in the ADS is never fly straight, never give forgegunners a chance to predict your escape path and side drops can be your best friend. fragmented missles are also your best friend when it comes to infantry kills because you dont have to have 100% accuracy |

I recently saw an assault ship, doing a very cool "helicopter gunship" looking move, where they flew up to a towertop, then did this sort of "rotate around in an inward-facing circle" routine... which kept their nose pointing towards the target the whole time. It look less than 1 circle to scrub the offender off the tower
Is that the "180 turn" that people are talking about, or something else?
more details would be appreciated

That 180 turn their talking about could best be described as a u-turn on a vertical plane. You fly towards the target, rotate 180* degree's, face the way you just came, and dip the nose while thrusting, this kills all forward momentum and depending on how far you dip the nose you either travel on a diagonal direction, gaining height as you travel back the way you came, for example. Or you travel on a level plane. |

I have yet to be on an ADS but have been practicing a move that I have to do otherwise anyway.
Move forward while low to the ground. This will tip you nose down and you will lose altitude. As you get the forward momentum quickly pull up with upward thrust and strafe vertically from near to far as you strafe horizontally while yawing. |
