I'm sure you'll all agree i'm an average merc with a lot left to learn. I don't feel bad about that, cause i first used a controller at age 47 when i bought a ps3 for DUST.
Just rolled a new toon, a Mimatar Vherokior girl. She's sexy but simple - named her Dawg Fuud.
She don't got much education, i didn't spend a single starting skillpoint.
And then i cruelly sent her to war with only the starter fits. I'm frugal that way.
She just graduated the academy. In one mission. With 1600+ warpoints.
If this is what a 48 year old spaz noob gamer can do, is the academy really serving peeps who grew up playing shooters on consoles?

I think the academy has its place and fullfills its purpose. But any real gamer, old school or new will just shrug it off.
It literally meant nothing more than a sort od introductory exposure. |

I think its supposed to say to the gamer - This is what its like when we're all on the same level of experience, then when you start public matches you understand that it will get better as you raise your skills |

I think it's more important than a mere 400 warpoints. Who knows maybe the devs are just testing. But they're testing with the most precious commodity in DUST - new players. |

Imagine...there was once no Academy. Noobs (I raise my hand in memory) were sent to the meat grinder early. They were left bewildered, crushed, disappointed, frustrated and angry.
The only thing I see bad with the academy is the WP. The idea is to keep them in there while they get adjusted. But at the same time, on the other side of the coin, nothing can really prepare the new player for the harshness of NE.
Even if the WP were set higher, would it actually matter? You have to think about it for second. Those new players are going against a majority of new players (of course some have alts) who, in a sense, train them to respond to that type of player. When they step into actual Ambush and Domination, they are more likely to come across a more ferocious player with experience who understands cover, flanking, who doesn't chase kills and looks for the advantages.
So in the end, it's gotta come some day. There's really nothing that could prepare the new merc for what goes on in NE. I tell new players all the time, you're going to die. You're going to die alot. It takes some grinding, patience and dedication if you want to be a monster on the field.
I know folks might get tired of this but it must be said. EVE has an reputation of being harsh. Dust has it too, in a sense, because of its connection to EVE. But it seems that isn't translating well with players or its not respected as such.

Didn't the devs say they were changing up the academy every week? Something about having a pile of optimized setpus that they want to try to see which works best. |

I don't really mind the changes when you're talking about Alts, you're not learning the game and do not really need to be there.
Too often bad players create Alts and go into Academy and murder the newbs and then think that they are totally amazing. We need to boot them out quick before their heads explode. |

To be fair knowing the layouts of the installations is a big advantage
As for the academy itself I was thinking about it and it does what its supposed to do I guess, give people a spot to learn the basic controls which is normally what a campaign mode is for The real problem is the huge gap between gear effectiveness not a lack of teaching people things |

I propose this.
Academy is locked to PSN, once a character gets out of academy for the 1st time on said PSN, any future characters on that PSN can NOT go though academy.
Lock Academy to militia gear, keeps everyone on even ground in regards to gear and skills but even an intermediate or pro player will destroy new comers with any militia weapon.
Bit of a risky and maybe an exploitable option, have academy feature ALL game modes, and a K/D requirement of 0.00-0.85 after 10000 wp is accumulated. Feature another "academy" type mode for players less than 60 days old but have over the 0.85 k/d req and 10000 wp where militia-advanced can only be used.
Before academy can be done for the 1st time have a non-optional tutorial level (like MAG) where the player will learn how to skill, what is recommended 1st and then straight to a battle scenario. The commentator (female robo voice chick person) will ask about inverted or regular controls and then ask the player if they'd like to change their controller scheme and directing them to the menu to do so if accepted, after all is done the player will be asked to turn on his/her voice chat and disable T2T (PTT). The player will then learn how to become a squad leader, setting attack/defend orders, drop vehicles, use an orbital, hack and the different types of hack-able objects and what they do all the while being in game by his/herself. After completion of this tutorial level the player can then jump into the 1st step into live combat progression. Academy. |
