You may still have everything selected. Before you have it find a battle for you, press square. This will allow you to select which type of battle you want to join.

I think there is a lag issue, or maybe an even bigger issue with hit detection. 95% of the time, I will fire my shotgun into someones face and do 0 dmg. The opponent will continue to run for another .5 seconds and then the kill finally registers...
