Haven't used them yet this build, so i can't exactly speak to tactics, but then its probably best to place them pre-firefight and lure people in with a scrambler pistol. Works on me every time, but i usually get shotgunned instead of RE'd

You're totally right if you want the RE's to be a viable weapon in the middle of a firefight, but that's really not what their for. Try using it to defend objectives, that's how i got killed by most of them when they were still legit, not detonate...
