Yeah, I was able to do this ludicrously well back at a friends house when we had two PS3s running, avoiding the need for comms. Just fly low over a group of reds and he saw when to detonate by looking at my screen. Fun times.

I would suggest coordinating on voice comms with a friend in pub matches to place their remotes on your ship; that way have them activate the explosives...remotely without destroying your ship. Will be even more effective with the new prototype ex...
