There were no shield updates, only armour. You are dying much quicker because people can actually hit you now. I don't fly dropships, but I've heard bad things about them, so fair enough. Remote explosives are not invisible.

Armour regens painfully slowly, so consider that before swapping. It also moves at a similarly awful speed. It'll also take you a good amount of time to get into a decent armour suit.
