Assaults are also for damage (for instance Amarr assault reduced heat build up means you're able to dish out damage for longer). Where it differs from the Commando is that the Assault is better at flanking and such.

The only point you can actually cover from afar with a sniper or rail tank consistently is Alpha. Bravo and Charlie are always rotating sockets each match and many of the sockets allow no direct line of sight of the hack terminal from afar.
