Right now, I think Dust does not have a very organized approach to their combat. It seems too much like a "drop in and start shooting" kind of game, as opposed to the Organized, Strategic, Military effort that would reflect the depth of EVE, its predecessor. There could be very expensive contracts between EVE players and the Dust players that could very well (like the trailers suggest) topple empires and give rise to new ones. These intensively expensive contracts need to have an organized and thouroughly strategic approach in the battle, not just skill with the gun. These are a few things I suggest should be put into place. Please like this post!
The New Tier of Leadership
- I suggest a new teir of leadership between the Theatre Commander and the Squad leader. It would be called a Regiment, Batallion, or Platoon Leader.
- He would be in command of particular Squads that are assigned to him, and the Regiment leader and those Squads assigned to him (by the Theatre Commander) Would also be assigned a Division, which is a section of the map. The map would be split up into 3 or 4 divisions consisting of Your Base, Enemy's Base, and the middle ground. This way the Regiment leaders don't have to command their squads across the entire map. It makes it more manageable and organized (which, once again, reflects the depth of the EVE universe).
- The Theatre Commander's job is to view the big picture and make a huge, ever changing, master plan that is split up into divisions that is viewed by the Regiment leaders. The regiment leaders job is to fulfil the Master objectives of the theatre commander, by creating his own objectives for individual Squads, which are visible to the Squad leader. The Squad leader's job is to keep the squad together, and use tactics (not as much strategy) to fulfil the objectives set by the Regiment leader. This makes a game worthy to all kinds of gamers. From FPS lovers, to RTS lovers, it will be a perfect game
The Mobile Command Devices
- This is a mini Tac Map for Regiment and Squad Leaders alike.
- Its use is to command Units in your Squad, or Squads in your Regiment, even when you aren't right next to them. It can also be used to organize evac for units in your Squad when the squad leader is killed (take a look at the "[request] calling a taxi" topic).
- It can be used to queue objectives, and pinpoint tactical strikes (like airstrikes and mortor strikes)
Leader Abilities
- There should be a Squad Leader and Regiment Leader Dropsuit that must be purchased in order to hold a leadership role.
- In addition to the addons that you can put on other dropsuits, the leadership dropsuits would be able to fit themselves with addons that would affect all units in their Squad/Regiment who are in their vicinity (Things like: Faster Reload, Longer Bleedout, Faster Shield regen, Passive Vehicle Repair, etc.)
- Squad Leaders and Regiment Leaders should also be given abilities that they can use, regardless of the addons they have in their suit (For example: Squad leaders should be able to call for mortor strikes, call for evac from dropships, call for orbital bombardments etc. The Regiment Leader should be able to: Use sensor arrays or call in spy planes/drones to detect enemy positions across the field, use electronic warfare strikes to disable or destroy enemy vehicles, etc.)
How to Pick Leaders
- Obviously we can't have a newb being the Theatre commander so there should be a level minimum req for each tier of leadership
- Leaders must have the proper qualifications in order to "apply for leadership role". Their Corporation must give them access to apply. This gives power to Corporations to pick the leaders based on performance.
- When the troops are awaiting battle in the war room, or even waiting in the battle queue, they should be able to apply for a leadership role. I don't think it should be "highest level gets the job" because then the game is just a handful of high level players who lead a mass of low level players who get bored quick.
- Also, there should be a dropsuit designed for each level of leadership, and it should be required for each leadership role
A few more points are having your character (during character creation) have a specific voice, so when you set objectives, your voice shouts out that command to all that need to hear it. That way, you still get someone talking to you, even if your leader doesn't have a mic. Also, some abilities should be able to be used even after you die, bu before you respawn. For example, if the Squad leader and his squad were behind enemy lines, and the Squad was discovered, and the leader was picked off by a sniper, the Squad leader should be able to call in a Dropship so he can evac his team, or command them to move to a rendezvous location until he can meet up with them. It would all depend on the situation, but some abilities should be able to be used after death, or from a long distance (probably not Airstrikes and Mortor Strikes. You'd have to be closer to call those)
Hopefully this isn't that long. If you think there is something I should cut out, please let me know. |

I believe CCP's goal was to make a regular fun shooter for your average player in public matches and keep corp battles for the Organized Military Effort which will yield more rewards. Which in my opinion the perfect way to do it. If your an over-avg player you shouldnt b limited in the way you play. |

What a waste of a post.
I'm not a fan of Leadership dropsuits, but I completely agree with giving us a nice split of responsibility across the field. I am extremely excited and anxious for more information on the MCC and the overarching chain of command, so I for one think topics like this are a good thing. |

Good point. I guess this post only applies to Corp battles. Obviously (I'm not sure if I put this in the original post or not) you don't need Platoon leaders for an ambush, or even a small skirmish. Maybe a large skirmish (5-7 points of capture) would need 1 or 2 platoon leaders, but obviously, the larger, more "high stake" battles would require a leadership, take orders, approach in order to be consistent with the depth of EVE.

So you aren't a fan of the whole "added strength within squad leader radius"? I'm just making sure I understand you correctly. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Maybe the squad leader has a passive attachment to his dropsuit (which has everything in common with everybody else's dropsuit, except that attachment) where he can select powers for those within his range.
The only reason I suggested this, was because players need a reason to stay in squad formation. Squad cohesion is the epitome of the whole strategic element of the game. Otherwise, there is no order. Any other suggestions to add Squad cohesiveness, I'm ready to hear them. |

Exactly! (I can't tell if you are trying to bash or helping me prove my point... I hope you're helping me) Right now (in the beta) all we see are glorified conquest battles, and TDM's. What I want to see in the Hard core Corp battles, is intensive, strategic, realistic, team work oriented, military efforts. Obviously this "conquest" game mode has been done many times (I actually think it may have been started by the Pandemic engine, with SBF 1, but I'm not sure) and we still know about it today, because it is the classic shooter mode. I want something a little deeper for the shooter being implimented to EVE, and I'm sure many of you agree, but keep the laid back version for the less intense gamers of DUST.

Amen to that. Luckily, the updates for dust will come every 6 months, so they will definitely be on their toes trying to update and maintain Dust to the best of their ability. |

Well the way I read it was that you needed to have one of these suits to be squad leader. If that were the case, I would be against it. If all it did was give you bonuses while you're squad leader, then I'd probably be ok with that. |

Yeah, I don't like that idea. I think the contractors should be able to have a say in leadership, and coprs should be able to refer people for leadership positions. The idea that any random dude can sit in the almighty seat of command only discredits the idea. Minimum req's like level, and leaderhsip skills should be implimented. |

This is how I picture the leadership command:
Commander- https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=352974#post352974
Squad leaders- gives out squad commands, say they lost contact from the commander, or is working alone, or relays commands from the commander. Squad leaders can also talk to the commander through viop, or talk to the EVE players to call in air strikes. |

Command suits are called crusader suits now. There's a commander role, which they said will play more like an RTS, calling down structures and stuff, maybe aiming the MCC guns as well, but I don't think there's any kind of suit related to being the commander.
Anyway, yeah, all the highly organized stuff will come across in corp battles. Or not. Depends how organized your corp wants to get. This is what I think is a valuable point to mention. Even if this is just for corp battles, you're presuming to know what's best for corps here. Every group will have its own take on how they want to organize. Corps should be given the tools to form their own leadership hierarchies. Being constrained by the roles you've written up in this thread wouldn't be a good way to handle it. |

I won't go into a brief history of EVE, but if you're ever up for research, I suggest you study how CCP introduced the tools involved in Fleet combat in EVE, it wasn't always the way it is now, and CCP LOVES to support its organized forces.
That being said, there was always a community of players opposed to the additional organization. The reason is obvious, the more organized players get, the more **** they get, and in Null sec now, coming NEAR a large corporations (Meaning within a star system or two), means your very likely to be picked up by a scout, tracked, probed, and destroyed, that is unless of course you high-tail it the hell out of there VERY quickly.
What I'm getting at is this, don't worry about it, this game will hands down develop one of the best leadership devices in any first person shooter. Give it time, and you'll see CCP will give its commanders, and leaders ALL the tools they could ever want or need to communicate, organize, and **** the unorganized players. Will they give you any actual stat bonuses, or specialized equipment? Probably, but not at first, and it will all be slowly introduced. However, be sure it will come, and be sure that unorganized solo gamer's will not find this a friendly game anywhere but in High Sec after a year or two.
All you need to do is look at your developers, and their past, look at what they've already built, and what they support. Its not even worth arguing or discussing this point because its just going to happen.. All the nay-saying and wishing on behalf of anyone who is resistant to the idea won't get them anywhere, because teamwork was the intention of the game, and catering to large groups of players (Corporations), was the point from the beginning. This was never about the solo player, its an extension of the EVE universe, and unless your play-style is highly covert and hidden (Think black ops ships in eve, jump freighters, and Blockade Runners), you won't be able to work Solo in this game where it counts. Solo players will be relegated to High Sec, and perhaps occasional Low Sec dealings depending on their testicular-fortitude. |
