This is going to be a thread for those of us who get complaints all the time of running full proto in pub matches...
I want to hear every old members memories of when they first started out and how badly they got protostomped and why it is actually a good thing to do because it drives the committed and good players to become great players...
So we will start out with mine... When i first started this game i am a student of the EvE universe so being highly versed in the EvE skilling tree I had no problem managing my way around this skill tree. My character had all the best stats i could give it and I was even good at first person shooters (like CoD and Bf3) having that quick twitch hand muscles making it easy to move target to target and keeping enemies in my sights. What i could not figure out for the life of my is why people (back in the day) like toyboi or regynum or protoman could survive facing off versus a whole team when their stats were only slightly higher than mine. At this time i was in On The Brink which in my opinion was not a horrible group but for sure not the best corp out there. Slowly through the help of my OTB friends and studying better gamers i learned how to use this games aiming to my advantage and also how to combine certain elements of my dropsuits that seemed a little outlandish to make a strong, faster, better dropsuit. But this still did not allow me to face off against whole teams. It merely made me able to kill just about anyone 1 on 1 and have a fighting chance against the greats of the time. It wasnt until i randomly one day got to squad with toyboi that i realized the aspect of the game that i was missing that all the greats had. My dropsuit at the time was ofcourse the b-series assault dropsuit. I loved my shields because they were able to recharge fast after i had killed someone. But what i never did was in the middle of a gunfight give them a chance to start recovering before killing my first target, so that when my second target or third or fourth came into the area, I was less weakened then if i had just finished him off right there. This was the missing aspect on how to beast a whole team together... give yourself a second or two to recover because most players in this game run after someone who is damaged rather than licking their wounds and trying to survive another day. The other thing this allowed for was me to be in a better position to finish off these players who chased me around because i was able to use corners to my advantage peaking out and back in when i wanted to not when they wanted me to... This is when i feel like i became someone that wasnt just another pushover and finally could compete. I then went on to get my proto vk.1 suit and fitted it to maximize my survivability to damage ratio and started to earn back my kdr that was soooo damaged from the hard knocks of this game. In using both great strategy and a great suit i was able to push from a 1.34 kdr at 3,500 kills to a 5.46 at 34,000 kills. This is also a way to prove urself and get noticed by the better (or even best) players and make ur way into their corps or alliances like i feel i have recently.
The thing is protostomping is a one sided battle mostly... But in saying that its only a one sided battle for a short period... Eventually the good up and coming players will figure out the strategy to this game and they too will obtain prototype suits with their own tweak on great strategies that can counter you and they too will become a "great" at this game. If we all ran militia to make it even when you start then we would all have a player base like Call of Duty does where 99.9% of the players are casual players who couldnt even tell you what a "route" was and they would be stat boosters for the .1% that was competitive gamers who run routes, push spawns, team cap and it would be pointless.
This game pushes you to better yourself and instead of giving up... figure out what they do that you dont so that you can survive an encounter with them... and maybe with a few friends you can kill them... I promise you killing us once with a standard or militia rifle annoys us but if u get us twice... It will get you noticed and if u get us more than that you will make it onto someones team no matter how few skill points you have.
So lets hear all the other veteran stories of your learning the game while getting protostomped... |

Yeah i figured some of you would for sure never get stomped anyone in imperfects and old school betamax and si where always the top but there are others like me that took our asswhoopings and came back with avengence...
To me that just makes this game better theres that sense of achievement unlike in CoD where you just picked up the "cheapest" weapon and learned how to rampage with it.. |

Mikey The Bandaid wrote:This is the best pro-proto running argument I've ever heard. You make great point, all of which are true. Facing hard competition always forces you to improve your game and everyone benefits from that.
Personally, sitting at 20.5 mil sp fully proto logi, I still prefer to run adv fits in pub matches mainly because I like making isk. The thing that ruins your argument is the fact that the vast majority of the proto stompers mass spam grenades and mass drivers which throws tactics straight out the window. How is anyone supposed to use cover or flank when you are exploded instantly by a proto forge 450 meters away?
pull a sniper out and head shot him twice... i do this all the time...
Forgegunners are one of the easiest things to counter because they have to stay on a high point so you always know where they are...
In my opinion the hardest thing to counter ( in competitive play trying to hack a point ) is an RE scout or speed logi... these guys can wreak havok without even being there and even if you know to look for the REs ur losing focus on them and putting urself in a compromised position again they can always be killed... but in competitive play they are strong as could be...
And hey grenade spam wouldnt be able to happen if more people ran flux grenades to take out hives and uplinks ;) |

nades are a bit strong but in what fps do nades not ultimately work just a little too well...
I love this game and i wish there were more people like us who saw that it wasnt just the proto suit that makes these people better than we were... It was strategy, how they set their suits up, gungame... or god forbid awareness...
I had a game yesterday where a guy was yelling in team chat about kill this guy why cant u blue dots kill the guy that dropped next to me... and i definately yelled back telling him "hey he just dropped why didnt u turn and shoot him?" They dont realize the other aspects of the game... Most of them probably dont even understand that uplinks can be hidden and you have to look for them so they thing we are just letting people run around the map and shoot them in the ass
its comical |

low genius wrote:been proto since day one. never used it in a pub. speak for yourself. proto is for pussies.
Ur right its for those of us who earned it... who stuck around and played long enough to get it... its for those who support the growth of the game... who want it to not be another call of duty that takes 2 bullets to kill someone... its for those of us who can sustain the usage of it because we have learned how to play the game well enough to not lose money using it...
the only ones i see saying proto stomping should end that are proto characters are those who cant sustain usage of it without losing money... i actually profit when i use proto whether by myself or in a squad... And for those who hate on proto squads i usually find myself dying more in a proto squad because my tactics go out the window cause i cant kill fast enough (and so do some of my other friends) compared to when im by myself im more cautious and run better routes and play more cautious... just saying |

Quote:Your not an 'old timer then' when I started geks were amazing and not a single person had proto, no double or triple sp events so proto took ages to get. You had it fking easy with those.
I got into closed beta but my code didn't work so I had to wait for open beta, downloaded it within a minute of it going live, closed beta was a joke anyway unless you enjoyed all that broken sht, the games broken now so I can't imagine how bad closed beta was, skirmish 1.0 sounds beast though.
How are you saying im not an old timer when you werent in closed beta and i was...
Im sorry i got annoyed with the broken build (aka tank dropship build) and took a break and when i came back the best were proto... Trust me i have been in this game longer than you and hated it almost the whole time lol
They should rename it Crack514 cause i cant get off this **** haha
But good to see some other old timers chiming in on the protostomped dayz |
