You usually fail. Staying back as a sniper is not cowardice. It's how a sniper does his job. Look up the art of sniping on the internet. Deployable shields sounds like a quick fix CCP is giving you whiners down below.

I have seen some bad ass snipers in this game, and they do not hide in hills. They move with their squad, squad takes fire from a long range.. sniper with squad takes knee in corner, or behind a box , or hell right there in the middle of their team and BAM takes out the guy that their squad is being annoyed by. That's what I call a sniper.. you guys in the hills, I would call spotters.. you miss half your shots anyhow. I watched a guy go 13/1 as a sniper running with his squad yesterday, That is elite sniping :p
( there are some decent snipers in the hills or on buidlings.. hiding up there with their Thales. But 90% of you just suck and think hiding in the hills will make you better.
