As for roleplayers themselves IN Eve, I've flown with them, I've been disgracefully betrayed by them (I"m looking at YOU Caldari Independent Navy Reserve (CAIN) of The Fourth District. Ladel and Svetlana, your time shall come!), and I've certainly fought with them, both against the decent ones (CVA, they will show up in force to kill you.... eventually) and the scrubs (CVA pets, particularly Silent Infinity).

So, in summary, no I don't think role playing is dumb. However I MAY make fun of you for it, but probably only behind your back, depending on a host of other circumstances.

Well a month or so after the TQ Merge i came across the EVE Role playing community based around Summit (NOT IGS! the in game channel summit) i been Role playing with the community for a few months now and i always felt out of place being the only active Duster So! i bring you "DUST OOC" a channel were us DUST role players can get together and form RP groups and such i also want to teach people how to RP so everyone can enjoy this so join me friend!
