Imo the best reason for AFKing is to protest CCP's mis-guided choice of a destructive in-match passive sp mechanic.
The passive 1 sp/second doled out in matches sends exactly the wrong message to players, especially new players. It is an FPS welfare system arbitrarily instituted by CCP(undoubtedly with the best of intentions), and it is a very generous welfare system. Generous to the point that for all of us, even the very best players in DUST, a significant proportion of their total earned match skillpoints are welfare skillpoints.
The subtext this welfare system generates is best described as poisonous - big brother CCP will take care of us, big brother CCP won't let us fall too far, big brother CCP will compensate us for our weaknesses. But if that is the case, what then is CCP saying about the value of our efforts and contributions on the battlefield?
This CCP skillpoint dole is counter to the inherent meritocracy that informs the ethos of traditional old-school FPS.
But far worse, imo, this sp welfare system is in violent opposition to the spirit of New Eden. I'm not talking about mere skillpont mechanics here. In EVE, when you go into combat, there is no safety net, there is no leveling mechanic, there is no compensation for weaker pilots. There are only the brutal laws of unrestrained war.
We already receive passive skillpoints in DUST - that non-match based trickle should be the only source of passive skillpoints in the game. When the fight starts, the only sp a merc earns should be for his or her actions on the battlefield.
There are many ways to make a merit-based sp system work for players of varying skill, but that's another topic and well-covered by may excellent threads on these forums.
Make it right, CCP.

What i was getting at was that in EVE, there's really no mechanic that I'm aware of that limits or modifies an engagement, or the payout from an engagement in terms of 'fairness'. Furthermore, players can put the sum total of years worth of effort of dozens of people in a cargohold, undock, and lose it all.
If you contrast that with what we have in DUST right now, where mercs can and do say: "i don't really gotta try too hard here, because no matter what i do i'll still get the majority of my skillpoints", the difference is fairly stark.
